Number 125 in the ANS Numismatic Notes and Monographs series, Noe's essay on the Pine Tree coinage completed his trio of monographs on Massachusetts silver. Once again, Crosby, the rock-like foundation for any study of the early coinage of our country, was frequently cited, to the extent of reprinting Crosby's die tables for the Pine Trees. Noe renumbered the Crosby varieties, adding a number of clarifications, and today these remain the standard for Pine Tree attribution. Noe further treated copies, inevitable imitations of anything desirable and ancient. Many of the plates illustrated examples from the T. James Clarke collection, which eventually landed in the hands of the acquisitive John J. Ford. As a result, Ford XII (October, 2005) is a mandatory "go with" for Noe, featuring oversized photography almost better than the coins themselves. Voted #52 of the top one hundred items of numismatic literature by the Numismatic Bibliomania Society.
