A group of three articles from The MCA Advisory (a publication of the Medal Collectors of America), combined into a single document. John Sallay examines the digital landscape of medal collecting, and his thoughtful analysis is equally applicable to other areas of numismatics. These articles were published serially in the MCA Advisory, beginning with the September/October 2015 issue. The Newman Portal acknowledges author John Sallay and MCA President Sklyer Liechty for sharing this series with a wider audience. The Portal also acknowledges MCA Producer Neil Musante for electronic formatting of the three-part series. McDowell argues that "Mrs. C. Wyllys Betts," previously thought to be the wife of Charles Wyllys Betts, was in fact his sister-in-law, Louise Betts. This work was sponsored in part by the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, via a Newman Grant awarded in 2020.
Mint Director H. R. Linderman clarifies policies related to distribution of medals, proofs, patterns, and "master coins." A fixed price list of medals for sale is appended. This copy is signed by Matthew A. Stickney.
Prejudices of all types represent a profound failure and blight on our society. These prejudices manifest themselves in individuals and nations having policies which, overtly or covertly, subtly or blatantly, discriminate on the basis of religion, race, nationality, gender, age or sexual orientation---religious and racial prejudices being among the most commonly encountered. This article traces the repercussions of religious and racial intolerance through the eyes of historical and commemorative medals. A group of medals has been selected that serve to illustrate, through imagery and wonderful art, that medals not only have provided a window through which to view historical events surrounding bigotry but also have been issued to actually promote religious and racial hatred.
