The first part of the famous collection assembled by the Norweb family over many decades began in at the turn of the century by Liberty Emery Holden, when he ordered Proof coins dierectly from the mint in Philadelphia then adding numerous branch mint coins in the finest condition possible. Liberty's daughter Emery May Holden was born in 1896 and soon began to take after her father with an acute interest in the coin collection adding to it and studing die varieties of the coins contained. Emery married R. Henry Norweb and for decades after, they both enjoyed adding to the collection, culminating with a trip to Egypt and participating in the great King Farouk sale. Over time the Norweb's donated many notable coins to the American Numismatic Society and the Simithsonian Institution, such as a 1787 Brasher doubloon and a 1913 Liberty head nickel. This wonderful family collection sale begins with U.S. half cents (including the finest proofs at the time to ever be offered), small cents, minor coinage (2 & 3 cent), half dimes and dimes, Twenty cent pieces, $3.00 and $5.00 gold coins, and California frational gold. The colonial offerings in this sale begin with the exceedingly rare Sommer Islands Shilling and New England silver pieces, followed by the Vermont, New Jersey and New York coppers many with rare die varieties.
