- 1843 AU58 NGC. WB-101. CAC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The first of three NGC AU58 half dollars in this sale. This is one of the most "common" dates in the Liberty Seated half dollar series, but not in this grade nor with this pedigree. This piece has attractive silver-gray toning with gold and blue highlights and just the slightest friction over the coin's high points. There are only a few tiny marks on the reverse fields; a black streak above the obverse ribbon will establish this coin's pedigree to the Eric P. Newman Collection. Even though 1843 is a common date for the series, extensive and interesting obverse and reverse die cracks are typical. There are approximately 20 die-cracked obverse dies and as many cracked reverse dies in various die marriage combinations. This specific coin has a diagonal die crack from the rim at 6 o'clock into the rock support below the shield tip. Start your cracked die collection with this coin. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $2.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $646.25 . - 1842 50C Small Date, Large Letters AU58 NGC. CAC. WB-101 Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The pairing of a Small Date obverse with a Large Letters reverse for the 1842 half dollar is more elusive than the Medium Date variety, though this does not translate into higher prices until the AU level. This coin has gorgeous blue-gray toning with gold highlights. The reverse die is characterized by many die cracks including those around the letters of the legend and radially from the eagle's beak to the second T in States. Another radial die crack bisects DO(L) to the tip of the olive stem and the eagle's right (observer's) claw. Only a few small gray wear-spots can be discerned over the high points. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $3.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $1,527.50 . Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.

- 1842 50C Medium Date, Large Letters MS62 NGC. WB-106, VP-003. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Attractive silvery gray toning with light blue and gold highlights. There are only a few minor marks in the reverse field above the eagle. The 8 in the date is recut west with a doubling evident to the east of the prominent 8. The upper loop of a third 8 shows plainly just right of the shield's point in the hemline of Liberty's gown. The reverse of this half dollar is one of two for this variety and in an early die state with only weak die cracks. Rare in Mint State, this is the second example of this die variety owned by Mr. Newman. NGC has certified only two examples labeled as the VP-003 variety; the other grades MS63 and that piece is also offered in this sale as lot 3695! A desirable variety for the specialist. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $3.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
