- 1834 25C MS66 S NGC. B-1, FS-901, R.1. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Five die marriages are known for the 1834 quarters, the present coin classified B-1, the so-called "1834, O Over F in OF" type listed in the Guide Book. The obverse die was used twice, to strike 1834 B-1 and B-2, but the B-2 was likely struck first. The B-1 obverse shows the left edge of Liberty's curl over the upright of the 4 in the date. Star 7 is recut. Star 13 is low and close to the bust of Liberty -- closer than on any other 1834-dated obverse die. The reverse used to strike this die marriage was previously used to create the 1833 B-2. Each shield stripe has only two lines (two pale gules), and no period appears after the C in 25C; both are key attribution points for this reverse. The legend is repunched between the D and S of UNITED STATES, the basis for the "1834, O Over F in OF" designation. The eagle has no tongue and its claw tips are doubled. This coin was struck from Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint Die State P (perfect dies), showing no die cracks or clashing, although the top-left upright of the M in AMERICA is missing and the first A in AMERICA is filled. The present Newman Collection example, certified MS66 S NGC, is Browning plate coin for the B-1 and is from the Browning Collection. This coin is the finest certified for the B-1 die marriage and is the second-finest regular-strike 1834 quarter. Delicate light gold toning covers both sides of this original coin. The obverse periphery is toned in a beautiful array of greenish-gold and blue, while the reverse rims show attractive blue and gold patina. Census: 7 in 66 (1 in 66+, 2 in 66 S), 2 finer (10/13). - 1825/2 25C MS64 S NGC. CAC. B-1, R.5. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Three die varieties are known for 1825 quarters, used to produce 168,000 coins. The two known obverse dies are both overdates, and are listed in the Guide Book. The Browning-1 die pair is the rarest of the three varieties, and the Eric P. Newman specimen is the finer of only two known Mint State pieces. The other Mint State example is the MS63 PCGS Eliasberg specimen, now part of the Gene Gardner Collection. There are also about a dozen AU survivors known. This coin has never been offered before. The Eliasberg-Gardner specimen has been off the market for 16 years, and will likely remain unavailable for many more years. The overdate on this obverse is plain and it is clearly a 2. On the other obverse, the overdate is uncertain. Struck from perfect dies with no evidence of the late-state reverse die crack, this lovely near-Gem displays rings of blue and gold on the obverse while the reverse is exceptional, with greenish- and reddish-gold, alongside cobalt-blue. - 1820 25C Medium 0 MS64 NGC. CAC. B-3, R.3. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. This example is tied for the third finest of only six Mint State examples known of the scarce 1820 B-3 quarter dollar. There is only one die state known for the die marriage, with a cracked obverse and perfect reverse. The B-3 is the only variety from dies that were not used for any other 1820 die marriage. While two finer examples are known, this piece from the Eric P. Newman Collection is extraordinarily attractive, and it was chosen as the plate coin in Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint. Liberty has a cameo appearance exhibiting brilliant silver centers that contrast nicely with blue, gold, and iridescent toning at the peripheries. - 1833 H10C MS67 NGC. CAC. V-7, LM-1, R.3. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. This scarcer die pairing is most easily attributed by the high final 3 in the date on the obverse, and the small period on the reverse that is the same size as the dentils. This is an early die state as seen by the almost non-existent die cracking on the reverse. The only crack we see is from the lower right corner of the scroll to the top of the eagle's wing. The V-7, LM-1 is also a conditionally challenging variety. The LM reference states: "Examples above EF are difficult to locate." The finest piece cited in their 1998 reference was from a Bowers and Merena auction from 1991, an MS63. This example is undoubtedly the finest known for the variety, and it is tied with two dozen others as finest for the date. Each side is remarkably free from abrasions, and as expected from the coins from this landmark collection, both obverse and reverse are beautifully toned in shades of blue-gray and rose with powerful underlying mint luster. - 1894 25C PR68 NGC. The 1894 proof Barber quarter claims a mintage of 972 pieces, fairly generous for a proof issue of that era. The 1894 enjoys a fairly high survival rate, and type collectors seeking a proof example of the design are especially fond of this date. The coin offered here is an incredible PR68 specimen, with vivid shades of champagne-gold and cerulean-blue toning on the obverse and some highlights of lavender on the reverse. The design elements exhibit pinpoint definition throughout and close inspection with a loupe reveals no mentionable surface flaws. Overall eye appeal is tremendous. Census: 5 in 68, 0 finer (10/13). - 1908-O 25C MS66+ NGC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Struck in the penultimate year of the New Orleans mint before it was turned into an assay office, this Premium Gem with the Plus designation is far above-average of what is expected. Normally luster is subdued and satiny and the strike is indifferent. This well-preserved quarter displays rich coloration in shadings of reddish-gray, an undertone of yellow-gold, and occasional spots of untoned brilliance. The strike is sharp overall with only slight softness noted on the forecurl of Liberty's hair and the top of Liberty's right (facing) wing. Census: 5 in 66 (1 in 66+), 2 finer (10/13). The middle bands exhibit considerable separation, and a magnifier is required to be certain this is not a Full Bands coin.
