The battle took place on September 17, 1862 at Sharpsburg, Maryland and claimed 23,000 casualties. Silver-gray surfaces exhibit sharp detail with a touch of softness on part of the lettering. The reverse features an anchor with HOPE above and E PLURIBUS UNUM below. The design was executed by John Howard Benson of the Rhode Island School of Design and silversmith Arthur Graham Carey.
