- Logan City, UT - Cache Stake Tithing Storehouse 5 Cents 189_ Rust 240, Nyholm 332. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is a rare Tithing Storehouse scrip series and seldom offered. Like all of the Newman Collection Mormon currency, the first time offered at public auction. Printed on salmon rag paper by Gast St. Louis & N.Y. The face style is similar to Salt Lake City, St. George, and Manti City notes. Beneath the beginning of the curving title, a beehive with busy bees sits among the flowers. A pattern border is all around. The die in the center shows the textual denomination outlined by the background. The obligation "Good for Produce, Live Stock, and Merchandise" is at lower right. The printed back shows a building at the center. Obligations similar to other series. Noted with "Edge and Internal Splits and Tears." The flaws do not reflect the overall appeal of this note, particularly the well-detailed back. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $15275.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18614. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- G. S. L. City, U.T. - Salt Lake City Corporation $1 Nov. 21, 1868 Rust 112, Nyholm 122, PCGS Very Fine 25. The series following the Great Salt Lake City Corporation notes differs and removed the word "Great" from the title. An attractive lithographed series, printed on both sides by J.D. Seymour, Kennard & Hay, Engr., New York. At bottom center, oxen struggle to pull Conestoga wagons over rough terrain, flanked by green protector lathe work rectangles over denomination text. The title is curved above the vignette. The ornate and deep green emblem back shows an outlined "1" at the center, with the title across at top, and PAYABLE IN U.S. CURRENCY along the bottom. This is a very scarce dollar denominated series. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $763.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18600. - Houston, TX - Republic of Texas $1 June 1, 1838 Cr. H23, Olson 503, Medlar 49. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This third series is referred to as "Medallion" notes due to its left emblem (or die). They are very hard to come by, and usually encountered in specialized collections. The notes were used to redeem an earlier series of paper money and make change for the initial series "Star" notes. This is also an intaglio engraved issue, with the imprint of Niles Print, Houston. Childs, Clark & Co, New Orleans. At the top center is a small vignette of a river god spilling water while a ship sails in the far distance. The full title flows around elegantly with the vignette bisecting it and "OF TEXAS" underneath. In center is a subtle, engraved Texas star. At the left is a perpendicular oval die, the "Medallion," with steamboat. Jefferson is at the far right. Plate A position with imprint at the lower right. An excellent example of this Shull-Criswell Rarity-9 (16-50 known) note type. Generally unheard of above the grade of Fine, this is above average. The $2 Cr. H24 graded PCGS Fine 15 Apparent realized $4,230 in Newman Part VI. Noted as "Cross-Cut Cancelled" and with "Hinge Repaired Cancellations; Small Edge Tears." The repairs are from the back reinforcements of the cut-cancels. This is very clean faced with the engraved details and signatures very clear. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $9400.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18593. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Harrisburg, TX - Briscoe, Harris & Co. $1 18__ Olson 1400, Medlar 1 Remainder. PCGS Extremely Fine 45. While not a very rare type, this has always been a popular Texas private issuer note. Engraved and printed by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. and not properly signed or issued. At top center, a small train loaded with bales heads east toward the harbor. A man sits on a fallen tree and watches it depart. Between textual block counters in the left end panel is an oval vignette of blacksmiths at work. The right end shows ONE on a sculptural lathe work panel. A lone star in a circle is at the base. These remainders are notorious for poor trimming. This is above average for the type with extra paper at the upper left. Only a short portion of the top right edge is trimmed in slightly. A beautiful example of this engraved Texas type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $955.28. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18588. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Yonkers, NY - Palisade Bank $3 April 15, 1862 NY-3000 G6 SENC. PCGS Fine 12. The Palisade Bank is a great New York title and location. In the past few decades, few Yonkers notes have met the auction block as they have been closely held by specialized local collectors. This date is unconfirmed and the Haxby Plate Note is one year later. The note, without a tint, was crafted by the National Bank Note Company. In an oval frame below the curving title, The Young Students shows three children engrossed in their schoolwork. At lower right, two beehives are nestled in a bower. Counters are in the lower left and upper right, both with extraordinary geometric detail. Well margined and detailed. This superb $3 Yonkers note is a fitting conclusion to the many great New York rarities offered here in the Newman Part VII sale. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1880.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18528. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Meridian, NY - Excelsior Bank $10 Feb. 1, 1851 NY-1350 G8 SENC. PCGS Fine 15. This is the highest denomination from the bank and a great rarity. Printed from the engraved plates by Gavit & Co. with their distinctive style. The Comptroller's Office seal is at the center, beneath the title. At left, a barefoot young farm boy leads a ram by one of his horns. At right, Commerce is seated upon a bale at the shore. Denomination blocks are in the lower corners. Fully signed and issued, complementing the $5 note from the Newman collection well. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1057.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18506. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Havana, NY - Bank of Havana $2 18__ NY-1005 G4 SENC. Remainder. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. A second Gem from this engaging Gavit & Co., Albany engraved and printed series. At the top, a milkmaid pauses to glance at something in the distance. Two bust-length male portraits on dark backgrounds are seen: one to the left of the vignette (perhaps the cashier, who would have been more prominent than the president in the financial backing role); in the lower right corner, the Charles Cook portrait used on the $1 (only this time in an oval). A superbly crafted note with deep inking making the vignettes stand out impressively. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18500. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Cincinnatus, NY - Cortland County Bank $5 Sept. 1, 1848 NY-640 G8 SENC. PCGS Fine 15. This is among the rarest upstate New York banks and is all SENC in Haxby at both locations; the other is in Ashford. Printed from engraved plates by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-York. At top center, a young man coaxes a reluctant sheep into the water as an older man observes. Behind, a boy and dog keep the rest of the animals moving forward. The allegorical female at the left end holds a cornucopia spilling fruit. A "5" shield is at her feet and a FIVE on a denomination block is below. Under the numeric counter at the right end, a farmwoman is busy raking. We have seen only one issued note from the bank, and this example has been in the Newman Collection for decades. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $587.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18496. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- St. Louis, MO - Mechanics Bank $50 18__ MO-20 G80a SENC. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is a stunning Danforth, Wright & Co., New-York & Philad. India paper proof on original cardstock, and we believe it to be one of two known examples. The design type in Haxby was based on Wismer and the earlier Gynne & Day period Bank Note Reporter description. This marvelous beauty was the top of the two-subject proof sheet from the 1990 American Bank Note Company Archive auction, lot 854. One of the most impressive Danforth imprint family's allegorical vignettes is seen at the top center. Wielding paintbrushes, mallet and chisel, and a compass, the three allegorical figures seem to be putting the finishing touches on a bust of George Washington. Mesmerizing vermillion "50" counters are in the upper corners. An oval Henry Clay portrait is at lower left; at lower right is a circular steamboat at landing scene. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Penciled "64" at upper right of wide card for identification. The bottom margin is tight, otherwise this looks like a Gem. Another stunning color proof from a rarely encountered state and bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $5875.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18474. - Corinth, MS - C., F., & T. Sawyers-Confederate States Exchange $2 1862 Kraus 55233, Leggett-10. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is considered by some to a be a sutler note issued by the Sawyers, and was cataloged as such in the Grover Criswell collection notes sold by Kagin's at the 1977 ANA sale. The series is listed in the sutler section in Kraus. Printed on white rag paper by Britton & Freligh, prs., Memphis. Under the arced CONFEDERATE STATES EXCHANGE, a circular vignette shows an eagle with a shield on the breast feathers and sun's rays in background. The top left shows a seated allegorical female holding a sickle in one hand and, with the other, supporting a cartouche showing a steamboat. In the upper right, field hands pick cotton. The lower right has "$2," which indicates the plate style. Noted as "Edge and Internal Splits and Damage; Backed." The backing is a thin paper sheet added to strengthen the paper. This faces up nicely, with strong details in the vignettes. When offered, this rare title and type always attracts enthusiastic bidding. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18447. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
