- Milwaukee, WI - People's Bank of Haertel, Greenleaf & Co. $1 18__ WI-525 G2. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. This is an extremely rare bank with only proofs known to us. This private banker's title would have issued notes using the partners' signatures. The bank took full responsibility for its circulation, with $805 in specie in the state comptroller's office for that exact circulation remaining. The beautiful series of proofs was engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. who did many of Wisconsin's Obsolete bank plates. A classic vignette from the imprint shows the frantic scene where two boys attempt to harness a frightened horse next to a farm hand, who has been thrown or knocked to the ground. A veiled woman is illustrated in an oval frame at lower left. Superior in condition to the Krause-Bookbinder-Wismer $1 proof sold in 2009, and the only other example in private hands. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is a Gem proof from another extremely rare Milwaukee title. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $763.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18726. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - Germania Bank of G. Papendick & Co. $3 185_ WI-465 G6. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. A desirable $3 proof from this ethnic title engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. This beautiful impression is unique in private hands. It is an India paper proof mounted on cardstock, and shows another very handsome layout. In the central vignette, a farrier shoes a horse while another blacksmith observes; a man holding a whip, perhaps the owner, is seated on a log. An oval portrait of a veiled woman is at top left. On the right is a tall vignette of three allegorical females, looking like caryatids: they stand upon a base with THREE on a block below, and support a numeral "3" above. As we have noted, an exceedingly rare partner named bank and not in the Krause Collection. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The first and only $3 proof from this extremely rare title ever offered. A prize Milwaukee Obsolete banknote proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18715. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Madison, WI - Merchants Bank $3 18__ WI-380 G4. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This $3 proof appears to be the only example in private hands without a protector. The Haxby plate note is from the sheet in the Wisconsin Historical Society. Another impressive India paper proof by Danforth, Wright & Co., New York & Philadelphia. The charming vignette at top center shows three allegorical females, with skirts fluttering as they fly through the air above a mountain vista. At lower right, Mercury depicted as a child sits in the upper half of the ornate "3," and a cherub with rudder crouches within the bottom curve. The base vignette shows a dog and safe motif with the addition of a set of scales. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. There are no auction records known to us, and this is likely the first and only example to be sold at public auction. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $998.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18697. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Madison, WI - Merchants Bank $1 18__ WI-380 G2. PCGS Choice About New 58. Another rare Madison bank with mostly proof notes known. This India paper proof was engraved and printed by Danforth, Wright & Co. with a tremendously attractive layout. Most of a partly concealed, sculptural "Lazy 1" in lathe work runs across the bottom center and extends into the seal to complete the feature. At top center, a milkmaid is seated on a log beside a large shield. It shows the sun rising over the mountains and a sailing ship and passing train in the foreground. Mercury is in a circular frame at lower right. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. The proofs without tint were not in the Krause collection sales, and we believe this is the only $1 proof without protector in private hands. There is minor handling on this impressively engraved proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $587.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18696. - Janesville, WI - Rock County Bank $5 Feb'y. 1, 1856 WI-295 G8. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The highest denomination from this series of Janesville proofs and a boldly printed Gem. Like the $3 offered in this sale, an India paper proof mounted on original cardstock by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. A superb rural vignette from this imprint's palette is seen at top center showing large farm animals that appear to be well fed and contented. An oval Henry Clay portrait is at the center of the right end between sculptural "5" dies. We know of the $5 India paper proof from the Krause Collection, but this is superior, and that example (with some paper thins), realized $2,300 in March 2010. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Another Gem proof that is rarely encountered except in elite collections. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18684. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

A Native American chief is seated with his bow at the lower right. Capital $25,000 is engraved on the plate. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is a dynamic series and possibly a unique proof. Tied for the finest graded of the gorgeous quartet. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. - Columbus, WI - Bank of Columbus $5 18__ WI-95 G6. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ. A Superb Gem India paper proof mounted on its original card, engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. This $5 denomination, unique from the sheet, is the highest denomination issued by the bank. The distinctive and rare historical vignette at top center relates to the aftermath of King Philip's War in New England. Major Waldron's Terrible Fight, engraved by W.W. Rice with background by James Smillie, appears to be roughly adapted from earlier engraved book images. The scene is subtle, but the impending danger is clear when Native Americans, one with knife in hand, are shown entering the household while the family is at prayers. As the dog responds, the mother reaches out to alert her husband. The lower left shows a Native American man with a spear on a galloping horse. "Hole Punch Cancelled" as noted, but only through the India paper, and "Mounted on Cardstock." A few of these "Waldron" vignette proofs have been present in the Newman Collection Minnesota and Wisconsin proofs. Since the rare vignette might only appear at auction every few years, this marvelous proof presents a great opportunity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1880.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18648. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Beloit, WI - Bank of Beloit $1 January 2, 1855 WI-50 G2. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ. The $1 denomination from an exceptional series of well-crafted proofs engraved and printed from the plates by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. on India paper mounted on original card stock. This is a Superb Gem. The Newman Collection proofs from this bank appear to be the only examples in private hands. In the vignette at the top, a weary shepherd reclines near his flock. Allegorical females are at the ends. Seated Commerce, at left, appears to hold up the "1" die above. At right, America as Minerva holds a shield and supports the flagpole with the furling Stars and Stripes flag. This is from the first series of notes with the bank's capital shown as $35,000 at the top, later to be raised to $60,000 (WI-50 G6a). The $3 Proof from this important series, PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ, realized $3,525 at the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This layout and condition are stunning. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1762.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18639. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Beaver Dam, WI - City Bank of Beaver Dam $1 18__ WI-30 G2. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. This is a rare bank that failed or closed and issued only $1 notes. An issued note from this rare bank appeared in the Krause sale, but the proofs without protector from the Newman Collection are the first we have encountered. This is the "B" position proof from the $1-$1-$1-$1 plate engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. Boldly printed on India paper mounted on cardstock. An elegant layout shows an inset portrait of a girl at the center, originally engraved in a longer view, under the banner titles. The lower left shows Plenty and Justice with a shield. This is a very well margined and evenly balanced type. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The similar PCGS Choice New 63 "A" position proof realized $3,760, well over its high estimate. This is equally impressive and rare. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1086.88. - Fairfax, Culpeper Court-House, VA - Culpeper Agricultural & Manufacturing Society $5 July 4, 1817 Jones & Littlefield BC45-10. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is a prize note from the Virginia Obsolete currency canon and is the plate note in the Jones & Littlefield reference. The northern Virginia location is tremendously important historically and we believe this Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. engraved series note is unique. This unincorporated bank was omitted by Haxby in his listings. However, this is similar in style and obligations to some Pennsylvania company "bank" notes. An agricultural vignette showing a plow and cattle is at the top between "5" counters. End panels are intricately designed. The FIVE in the cartouche at left is over a leaf and vine pattern. At the right, VIRGINIA is in the cartouche. An oval "V" die is at the bottom center. Noted with "Small Edge Tears; Hinge on Back" only. The condition is outstanding and this is the Virginia "JL" plate note. This was not in Affleck or any other collections we surveyed. This is perhaps the most important Virginia note in the Newman VII sale. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3525.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18619.
