- Whitewater, WI - Merchants and Mechanics Bank $1 18__ WI-875 G2a. Proof. PCGS Gem New 65. The second-to-last Wisconsin proof note in this second Newman Collection paper currency sale is a very beautiful example. Engraved and printed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New-York on India paper from the $1-$2 plate. Another exceptional full color tint note with light orange across in a micro-lettered ONE pattern. Half the frame and the upper right counters are a deeper vermillion. The central vignette of Finding the Red Ear depicts a game where the lucky cornhusker gets to give someone a kiss. Judging by the pile of husks, the group has been at this task for quite a while. While the young man seems pleased, the young lady appears reticent. An elaborate "1" counter appears in an oval at the upper left, with a Native American man on one side and an Agriculture on the other. At lower right, a train travels through the countryside. The Krause Collection contained a $1 bond paper Specimen of this type. The $2 proof from the sheet, graded PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent, realized $4,935 at the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This extreme rarity has vibrant color. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2702.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18764. - Waupun, WI - Waupun Bank $3 18__ WI-855 G6. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. The highest denomination engraved and printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-York. This example is superior to the Krause Collection proof and appears to be the only other example available to collectors. Slightly left of center, America, draped in the billowing Stars and Stripes, is borne through the sky by an eagle with its wings outstretched. At left, George Washington is dramatically posed. With one foot resting on a cannon tail, he holds his sword in his right hand and points at America with his left. The female portrait at the lower right has the same Renaissance style as that on the $2 previous, but the dress and pose differ. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Another very sharp impression with bold contrast. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1116.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18763. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Waupun, WI - Waupun Bank $2 18__ WI-855 G4. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. This is unequivocally the finest known Waupun Bank $2 Type I Santa Claus note. None are known issued, only proofs and a single bond paper Specimen. Beautifully crafted from the Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-York plates. This is a Superb Gem New 67PPQ proof on India paper mounted on original cardstock. This is the first offering of the immaculate Newman Collection example. In private hands, it joins one other proof and one bond paper Specimen with confirmed auction records. At the top, right of center, is the Roger H. Durand Type I Santa Claus vignette. Wrapped in furs, St. Nick is seated in his sleigh on the snow-covered rooftop as his eight reindeer take flight. According to Durand's research, the engraver might be Freeman Rawdon, George W. Hatch or James P. Major. At lower left is a seated allegorical female with a balance scale and commercial goods adjacent. The oval portrait at lower right portrays an almost saintly, Renaissance-style woman wearing a laurel wreath and veil. The other undisputed proof example is the Haxby plate note from the Krause Collection-British American Banknote Company Archive sold in September 2009 for $16,100. The Krause Collection duplicate was a bond paper Specimen that sold for $10,350 in March 2010. It first was auctioned in November 1994 for $11,000. The Roger H. Durand Santa Claus Collection example appears to be the same note, but affixed to a backing card, that we sold in the 2012 FUN collection sale. The final example known is in the Wisconsin Historical Society and not available. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is a stunning Santa Claus proof. The other known examples, when occasionally making an appearance, have all garnered strong interest and realizations for over two decades. This Newman Collection proof is the finest of them all. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $10575.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18762. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
