- Oshkosh, WI - Oshkosh City Bank $5 18__ WI-625 G8. PCGS Choice New 63. The $5 proof from this gold dollar-vignetted series by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-York is unique in private hands. This imprint was absent from the 1990 American Banknote Company sale. Five figures and five gold dollars are seen at the top. Three obverses and two reverses are shown. The dates displayed are 1851 and 1852. The cherubs in the clouds above them hold symbols of Mechanic, Mercury (Commerce) and Ceres. A Native American princess to the left of the coins watches the frontiersman at the right gesture toward a passing train, an indication of progress. The Native American chief at the left end holds up a wampum belt, contrasting the monetary systems and representing peaceful trade. A small male portrait is at the lower right. There are no auction records for this denomination. This is a Choice example from the Newman proofs. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. A lovely coin vignette proof from this extremely rare title. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1116.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18737. - Oshkosh, WI - Oshkosh City Bank $1 18__ WI-625 G2. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. This is an extremely rare bank that failed, but also redeemed the entire circulation according to state records. The Newman Collection proofs include three denominations printed from the $1-$2-$3-$5 plate that are unique in private hands. Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-York engraved the plate with their suite of gold dollar vignettes. The number of coins in each vignette corresponded with the denomination, thwarting note raisers. This is an India paper proof on original cardstock. A farmer clearing his land rests his foot and his axe on the stump of the large tree he has chopped down. A farmhouse and Conestoga wagon are in the background at right. In the foreground at left, the single reverse of an 1857 gold dollar rests on another large stump. At far left, a tall vignette shows a weary hunter, his dog and a fallen rabbit outside of its burrow. A small Webster portrait is at the lower right. There are three known in private hands of the $1 denomination. Chet Krause had a $1 bond paper Specimen from this title that realized $1,495 in the September 2009 sale. There is a Gem Proof $1 from the 52 Collection" Part I sale, now in a private collection. Noted as "HPC; UL Corner Reattached; Minor Adhesive Residue on Face" by grading and "Mounted on Cardstock as made. Some minor flaws, but overall this is attractive with its elegant style. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $423.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18736. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Montello, WI - Bank of Montello $2 18__ WI-575 G4a. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. According to Chester L. Krause, the bank had no office or bank building. However, a $1 issued note was sold in the Krause Collection auctions. The bankers supposedly moved to Princeton, Wisconsin in 1860 and closed this operation. The bank printed only $1-$2 sheets engraved by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New-York. This is a handsome India paper proof. An idyllic central vignette depicts a Native American family in a canoe with the father paddling and the mother holding her infant on her lap, snug in a papoose. Tepees are seen on the shore. At lower left, a young woman resting her pail on the fence as she steps through the gate seems to glance out at us. The base vignette shows a woman's portrait. A red protector TWO is across the bottom center. As usual, the plated proofs in Haxby and the Krause specialty book are from the Wisconsin Historical Society. This $2 proof is the only example in private hands to our knowledge. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with a "Minor Paper Scuff on Back at Upper Left" which shows some thinning at the upper right face corner. The point is academic as this $2 Montello presents another important and unique opportunity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2232.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18735. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Monroe, WI - Bank of Monroe $1 18__ WI-570 G2a. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The $1 proof from a striking Danforth, Wright & Co. engraved series of four denominations with red protectors. The title converted to the First National Bank of Monroe and redeemed most of the issued notes. A Gem India paper proof on original card stock with superb vignettes and die craftsmanship. At top center, a man leads a bull past resting goats while another, in riding attire, speaks with a farmer and boy. At far left, a buckskin-clad hunter reloads his weapon after felling an elk. A red protector ONE is across bottom center. Proofs from the bank are rare; however, there was a complete sheet in the 1990 American Banknote Company Archives auction at Christie's in 1990. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This Gem, with a stellar pedigree, is newly offered to the collecting community. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $822.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18734. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - State Bank of Wisconsin $10 18__ WI-535 G8b. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. On this $10 proof type, as on the $5, Capital $400,000 was engraved on the plate and printed on a two-subject proof sheet by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. It is a Gem India paper proof mounted on original cardstock. Likely the only example in private hands, and a superb proof. As noted above, Haxby and Krause do not note that the first digit is a "4," rather than a "1." The original "1" was recut, altering it to a "4." Thus it is an unlisted essay proof for an authorization amount they did not achieve. At center, a panoramic view shows a train that has traversed the long bridge over the river and continues westward, smoke streaming behind. At lower left is an oval frame with a portrait of a man in business attire. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Another exciting discovery from the Newman Collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2115.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18733. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - State Bank of Wisconsin $5 18__ WI-535 G6b. Proof. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. This Gem $5 proof is from the exceedingly rare late series of notes with Capital $400,000 engraved on the plate and printed on $5-$10 sheets by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. Haxby and Krause do not note this anomaly, but close inspection shows the first digit to be a "4." (The leg and crossbar, clearly seen on the numeral, form a point that touches the dollar sign.) This unusual proof is from a recut plate, on which the original "1" was altered to a "4," producing an essay proof for an authorization amount they did not achieve. The only other example is on the archived sheet in Madison at the Historical Society and plated in both Haxby and Krause. At top left, three sea nymphs, two sporting pearl adornments, hold an angel aloft as they swim about. A Henry Clay portrait is to the right. The $400,000 series proofs were not in the Krause collection. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is a gorgeous example from the epic Newman Collection selection, continuing with its unique opportunities. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18732. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
