- Milwaukee, WI - State Bank of Wisconsin $5 18__ WI-535 G6b. Proof. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. This Gem $5 proof is from the exceedingly rare late series of notes with Capital $400,000 engraved on the plate and printed on $5-$10 sheets by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. Haxby and Krause do not note this anomaly, but close inspection shows the first digit to be a "4." (The leg and crossbar, clearly seen on the numeral, form a point that touches the dollar sign.) This unusual proof is from a recut plate, on which the original "1" was altered to a "4," producing an essay proof for an authorization amount they did not achieve. The only other example is on the archived sheet in Madison at the Historical Society and plated in both Haxby and Krause. At top left, three sea nymphs, two sporting pearl adornments, hold an angel aloft as they swim about. A Henry Clay portrait is to the right. The $400,000 series proofs were not in the Krause collection. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is a gorgeous example from the epic Newman Collection selection, continuing with its unique opportunities. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18732. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - State Bank of Wisconsin $2 18__ WI-535 G4. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is an extremely rare bank, and we are not aware of any issued notes. The bank supposedly had a maximum $250,000 capital authorization when it converted to the Milwaukee National Bank in April 1865 and likely redeemed all of the circulation. This India paper proof mounted on original cardstock is from an early series with Capital $150,000 engraved on the plate by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., New-York & Phila. At the top, Commerce reclines at the shore holding a narrow spyglass. An elaborately framed oval portrait of a woman is below at the left. The only other example known is the Krause-Bookbinder-Wismer India paper proof that sold for $2,530 in September 2009. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. A well-balanced and handsome proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18731. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - Second Ward Bank $5 185_ WI-530 G6a. PCGS Very Choice New 64. An extremely rare $5 denomination from this Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago engraved and printed series. This is the only proof with red protector known to us in private hands. Printed on India paper and mounted on its original card. An allegorical female with Mechanic's tools sits at the shore at top left. A clipper ship is at sail in the lower right corner. The red "5" protector is at the top center between the vignette and comptroller's seal. The only other example of this type is the bond paper Specimen sold in the second Krause sale in March 2010 for $2,990. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is a very sharp looking proof from a bank rarely encountered. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1057.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18730. - Milwaukee, WI - Second Ward Bank $2 185_ WI-530 G4a. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is a great title and interesting Milwaukee bank. According to Chet Krause, the bank failed in 1862, but the state supposedly had the gold to redeem the notes. We have never seen an issued note. The bank also provided clearinghouse services for several scrip note issuers that used the "Lipman" lithographed style. Engraved and printed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago on a $1-$1-$2-$5 sheet array. Printed on India paper only. A wide vignette shows a sidewheel steamer traveling past a port city. At left, a milkmaid with her pail nearby sits on a large "2" with a view of the sea behind her. One hand is behind the number while the other is in front, for a three-dimensional appearance. This is the only example in private hands and is a handsomely engraved denomination. There is an unlisted series of proofs without protector that appeared in the 1994 Smythe St. Louis sale. The $2 proof from that series realized $4,600 at the first Krause sale (2009). Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. A gorgeous proof from a fascinating Milwaukee title. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18729. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

This is one of two $3 proof examples known to us in private hands from this extremely rare title and series. A boldly printed India paper proof on its original card from the engraved plates by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. and the only example from the Newman collection. Beautifully engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., New-York & Phila. A very choice India paper proof mounted on original cardstock. At top left, a seated milkmaid holds up a flower; her cows are nearby and a farmhouse is in the background. A subtle, tall "2" right of center has a sculptural effect. The upper right has an unusual "diamond" counter. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. An important denomination from this set of private banker's proofs. Ex: Eric P.
