- Milwaukee, WI - Milwaukee Bank $1 18__ WI-505 G2. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. This is a mysterious and rare Milwaukee Bank that possibly never opened, leaving only proofs and bond paper Specimens available to collectors. The proofs were printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New-York on $1-$2-$3-$5 sheets, and we offer a complete denomination set from the title in this sale. This is an India paper proof mounted on original cardstock and a well-engraved type. On a hill at top center, a farmer enjoys a drink of ale with his meal as his dog looks up expectantly. A badger is depicted in the background. Minerva, representing America, is seated at the lower left resting her arm on a large "1." She holds a scroll and rests her foot on two books; an owl is at her feet. This is the only example in private hands to our knowledge, with the other proofs from the series held by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Near the upper left corner is some "Minor Edge Damage at Left." Noted as "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. There are hole punch cancels in the India paper only. This is extremely rare and attractive. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18721. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - Bank of Milwaukee (2nd) $2 Jan. 2, 1855 WI-500 G4. Proof. Very Choice New 64. The first Bank of Milwaukee was from the Territorial period. The bank did not officially emit notes due to conflicts among internal officers, but it did prepare proofs and remainders from different series. The second Bank of Milwaukee, from the 1850s, issued notes from several sub-series of increasing capitalizations (from $50,000 to $300,000) and shortly thereafter became the National Exchange Bank of Milwaukee (Charter #1003, which issued Original Series to Small Size notes). Issued notes from the second bank are exceedingly rare and proofs are extremely rare. This Choice example is unique in private hands in this format. Engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., New York & Phila., from a $1-$1-$2-$5 sheet configuration, on India paper mounted on cardstock. This $2 is from an important series featuring the Santa Claus Type IV type on the $5 denomination that we sold in the Newman Part VI sale for $30,550 (graded PCGS Gem New 66PPQ). At top center, three allegorical females float on the clouds. Plenty, with her cornucopia is at left; Commerce, leaning an elbow on each of the other figures and holding a caduceus, is in the middle; and Justice, with her sword and scales, is at right. A scene with ships sailing in the distance is beside her in the background. The tall vignette at left shows a hunter in the forest with his faithful dog. This is from the first capitalization of $50,000, which is engraved on the plate. This is the same rarity as the "Santa Claus" proof from the series, but obviously without that immensely important vignette. The first $1 proof from this Newman Collection sheet saw splendid competition in the Newman Part VI sale, realizing $3,995 (also a PCGS Gem New 66PPQ). Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. There are two faint foxing patches, hard to see at first. Otherwise, this has a Superb Gem appearance a presents and unique opportunity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1703.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18720. - Milwaukee, WI - Marine Bank $5 18__ WI-485 G6. Proof. PCGS Gem New 65. The highest denomination from the Toppan, Carpenter & Co., New-York & Phila. series of India paper proofs on original cardstock from the Newman Collection. Like the $2 proof from the series, this is likely unique in private hands. The vibrant scene and veiled woman used on the $1 Hudson City Bank are seen here. This time, the port vignette is at top center and the woman's portrait is at lower left. This is another exceptional design and the note appears to be "PPQ" in our opinion. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. A high-caliber Milwaukee proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18719. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - Marine Bank $2 18__. WI- 485 G4. Proof. Superb Gem New 67PPQ. This is an important Milwaukee proof note rarity engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., New-York & Phila. A stunning India paper proof on original cardstock with deep, clear black inking. A lovely pairing of TCC rural vignettes is seen. A farmer taking a meal break while his horses munch on hay is depicted in the central vignette. The scene at lower left shows a farmer (perhaps the same man at a different time of day) with a sickle casually draped over his shoulder as he smokes his pipe; the horse is very interested in the bundle of hay the man holds. The base vignette shows ducks and ducklings. Chet Krause was fortunate to own the only issued note known to us, the $1 plated in Haxby, and a $5 bond specimen with protector from his purchase of the Del Bertschy Collection. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is the only $2 denomination of its kind in private hands and an exemplary proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1351.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18718. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - Marine Bank $1 18__ WI-485 G2. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. This short-lived bank closed in 1859, and left enough funds with the state comptroller's office to pay off their $2,844. These Toppan, Carpenter & Co., New-York & Phila. proofs were printed on $1-$1-$2-$5 sheets, and the Newman Collection proofs without protector are the only examples available to collectors. A Gem India paper proof mounted on original cardstock and a bold example. As befits the title, ships are shown at sail in the busy harbor scene at the top, and a sailor is at lower left. The Gothic title across the center provides and an excellent counterpoint to the nautical vignettes. There were no proofs from the title in the Krause collection. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This has a very intriguing layout and design. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1468.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18717. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Milwaukee, WI - Germania Bank of G. Papendick & Co. $5 185_ WI-465 G8. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58. The highest $5 denomination from this fabulous Milwaukee title. Unique in private hands to our knowledge and an issuer not in Krause. This is an India paper proof mounted on original card by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., New-York & Phila. A lively, and highly detailed logging vignette is slightly right of center. While one lumberjack rests on a stump, the other is shown with his axe ready to strike another blow to a massive tree. At upper left, Ceres supports a "5" counter. At lower right, a train rumbles toward the viewer. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made." There is some minor handling, seen with scrutiny, but this proof has a Gem appearance. This is one of the great Milwaukee Obsolete notes and the last proof of the title available from the Newman Collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18716. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
