- Madison, WI - Dane County Bank $1 September 15, 1854 WI-365 G2. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. The Dane County Bank became the First National Bank of Madison, and we have never seen an issued note from the title, only rare proofs. This is an India paper proof mounted on its original card, engraved and printed by Danforth, Wright & Co. The layout is quite interesting. A reclining Native American princess leans on a rock and watches the train pass far below. At the left is the stacked title. The far right shows a sculptural, tall "1." Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. We believe there is only one other proof in private hands. That note is still on an uncut proof sheet; it was originally from the 1990 American Banknote Company Archives sale, and it was later sold in the first Krause auction. The left margin is a bit tight, but this proof is boldly printed and extremely rare. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $763.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18692. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Madison, WI - Bank of The Capitol $2 18__ WI-360 G4. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. Madison, as the state capitol, was a busy financial center with several banks. This is a rare "State Capitol" title with mostly proofs known to us. The beautiful series of India paper proofs was engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. on a $1-$2-$5-$5 sheet. This denomination shows a Native American man on a hill overlooking a scenic river. The same vignette was used on the $1 notes of Beaver Dam's Mercantile Bank and the What Cheer Bank of Providence, RI $1 type. A man carrying long corn stalks is at the lower left. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as prepared at the engraving company. This exhibits only some minor wrinkling and has a Gem appearance. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $646.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18691. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Laporte, WI - Oconto County Bank $10 Aug. 1, 1857 WI-355 G4a. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. This is an extremely rare bank and proof type. Engraved and printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York on India paper only. The bank authorized only $5 and $10 denominations, and we know of no issued notes extant. The vignette personifies the sailor and miner from the state seal, portraying them with the shield on which a badger rests. At left is a steamship on a waterway, and at right are factories, showing that the state is progressing as exhorted by the motto FORWARD. A mysterious woman is seen in the lower right oval. A red protector TEN is across in large letters. We sold the $5 proof from this series in the Newman Part VI sale (lot 19406) graded PCGS Very Choice New 64, which realized $5,405. That type showed a unique vignette of a frontiersman thwarting a Native American wielding a tomahawk. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This rarity is equally important, and it is the only other proof from the bank in the Newman Collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18690. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- La Crosse, WI - La Crosse County Bank $3 18__ WI-340 G6a. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The last available Newman Collection proof from this remarkable series engraved and printed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York. A Gem India paper proof mounted on original cardstock. The red tint covers the note with a micro-lettered THREE pattern, becoming deeper vermillion around the frame and toward the upper left counter. An octagonal color die is at the upper left corner. A large white outlined "3" is right of center within the tint. At lower left, a Native American princess reclines with her arm on seated America's lap in a childlike manner. A tranquil scene showing canoes on a mountain lake is at left. America points in the other direction to an urban view, indicating that the industrialization of the country is the way of the future. There is only one issued note known from the bank, also a $3. That was from the Krause Collection and later sold in the 52 Collection sales. The $2 proof from the series, PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ, achieved $8,225 and the $5 proof, PCGS Gem New 66PPQ realized $9,988 in the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is another exceptional proof type and an outstanding opportunity. Ex: Eric P.
