- Janesville, WI - Rock County Bank $5 Feb'y. 1, 1856 WI-295 G8. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The highest denomination from this series of Janesville proofs and a boldly printed Gem. Like the $3 offered in this sale, an India paper proof mounted on original cardstock by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. A superb rural vignette from this imprint's palette is seen at top center showing large farm animals that appear to be well fed and contented. An oval Henry Clay portrait is at the center of the right end between sculptural "5" dies. We know of the $5 India paper proof from the Krause Collection, but this is superior, and that example (with some paper thins), realized $2,300 in March 2010. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Another Gem proof that is rarely encountered except in elite collections. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18684. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Janesville, WI - Rock County Bank $3 Feb'y. 1, 1856 WI-295 G6. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. As we have noted, all the banks from Janesville, including this, are very rare. This is another well-engraved series of proofs by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. and was printed on India paper mounted on original cardstock. The only other denomination set in private hands comprises the former Krause Collection proofs, all with ex: James Bookbinder via D.C. Wismer pedigrees. In the top center vignette, townspeople wave to the engineer on the train. A portrait of a girl with a hair band and fur collar is at upper left. At lower right, Ceres is seated holding a small scythe and sheaf of wheat with an ox behind her. The base vignette shows a dog's head in profile. The India paper Krause Collection note, plated in both reference books, realized $1,495 in September 2009. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The top margin is close, but this proof has "PPQ" attributes. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18683. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Janesville, WI - Producers Bank $3 18__ WI-290 G6a. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. The $3 proof from this exceptional series is another Superb Gem with vibrant color and dark, contrasting vignettes. An India paper proof by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York. The color tint plate is similar to the other denominations, with a complete light orange tint that has a micro-lettered pattern THREE across the note with deeper orange around most of the frame. Like the $1 and $2 proofs, the left and right top corners have deeper tinted octagonal counters. At lower left, a curious horse pokes his head over the fence separating him from the cattle. At lower right is an oval portrait of James Buchanan, who despite being historically considered one of the least effective American Presidents, appears on many Obsolete banknotes. There is one $3 proof known in private hands as we have cited, from the Krause Collection and originally discovered in the Wellstood album. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. The Newman Collection proof has state-of-the-art color tinting craft from this rare imprint and is the finest known example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2350.00. - Janesville, WI - Producers Bank $2 18__ WI-290 G4a. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. This is another exceptional proof printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock. It boasts one of the Wellstood, Hay & Whiting imprint's great vignettes. The complete light orange tint has a micro-lettered pattern TWO across the note with deeper orange on the frame. Like the $1 proof, the left and right top corners have deeper tinted octagonal counters. At top center is the vignette, Finding the Red Ear, used on very few notes. This is the version engraved by WHW and later adapted by the American Bank Note Co. In frontier days, the chore of corn husking was enlivened by a game in which the finder got to kiss the young lady of his choice. Here, all three look expectantly at the candidate who seems either shy or unhappy. At lower left, Commerce holds a large "2." We do not know of another $2 proof in private hands. In the Newman Part VI sale, the $5 proof from the series, PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, realized $9,888. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This is certainly one of the most beautiful proofs in this epic Wisconsin offering. Destined for the finest collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3760.00. - Janesville, WI - Producers Bank $1 18__ WI-290 G2a. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. This is a very stunning, full color proof from the Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York imprint, a firm not contained in the 1990 American Banknote Company Archive sales. It is the lowest denomination from the series. We know of only one other proof in private hands outside of the Newman Collection, a $3 India paper proof affixed to paper. Initially discovered in 2007 it was part of the "Wellstood Album" that was broken up and sold at the Memphis auction that year. This Wellstood family imprinted proof is printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock. The complete light orange tint has a micro-lettered pattern ONE across the note with deeper orange around the frame. The left and right top corners have deeper tinted octagonal counters. The Wellstood vignette dies used have a distinctive flair because they were cut with a flat graving tool. Above the title, a farmer pours slops into a trough for fat, hungry hogs. Two children are in an oval at lower left. One holds a bunch of grapes; the other, with a dreamy expression, holds a sickle. There are no issued notes from the bank to our knowledge. The only other compete set of proofs is on the sheet in the Wisconsin Historical Society that is plated in the Krause and Haxby references. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. This magnificent color proof is as vibrant and fresh as the day it was printed over 150 years ago. A key series of full color proof rarities from the Newman Collection commences with an exceptionally beautiful type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3290.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18680. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Janesville, WI - Janesville City Bank $5 Jan. 2, 1855 WI-285 G6. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is a very rare Janesville title. It is the first of two impressions from the $1-$2-$5-$5 sheet engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co, New York. A Very Choice proof printed on India paper only. As seen on the Fond du Lac $5 proof and issued note with protector, America as a Native American princess is prominent at the upper left. She holds a cornucopia spilling coins while reclining amid a number of symbolic items. The eagle stands on the globe on which AMERICA is inscribed. At the right end is an oval portrait of a woman posed with her finger at her chin, thus displaying her fine lace cuff. The Krause Collection had only a $5 bond paper Specimen note from the bank, with flaws, and an ex: Bookbinder Collection note. This proof is in superior condition. The $2 proof from the series, PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, realized $2,585 in the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This is a very bold, deeply inked impression; it is beautiful and striking. The only other proofs from the series are in the Wisconsin Historical Society. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $822.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18679. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
