- Janesville, WI - Janesville City Bank $5 Jan. 2, 1855 WI-285 G6. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is a very rare Janesville title. It is the first of two impressions from the $1-$2-$5-$5 sheet engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co, New York. A Very Choice proof printed on India paper only. As seen on the Fond du Lac $5 proof and issued note with protector, America as a Native American princess is prominent at the upper left. She holds a cornucopia spilling coins while reclining amid a number of symbolic items. The eagle stands on the globe on which AMERICA is inscribed. At the right end is an oval portrait of a woman posed with her finger at her chin, thus displaying her fine lace cuff. The Krause Collection had only a $5 bond paper Specimen note from the bank, with flaws, and an ex: Bookbinder Collection note. This proof is in superior condition. The $2 proof from the series, PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, realized $2,585 in the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This is a very bold, deeply inked impression; it is beautiful and striking. The only other proofs from the series are in the Wisconsin Historical Society. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $822.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18679. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Janesville, WI - Central Bank of Wisconsin $2 18__ WI-280 G4. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. A Gem India paper proof by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. from this well engraved series. This is another very high quality proof from the Newman Collection, likely the only example in private hands, and it has a particularly bucolic theme. In the wide vignette at top center, a woman pours slops for pigs and a man rests at the edge of the trough where one of the horses drinks. At center right, between two counters, a woman carries grain on her back. At the top is Capital Stock $100,000. The PCGS Gem New 65PPQ $3 proof from the series, also unique in private hands, realized $2,115 in Newman Part VI. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled." The deep inking and sculptural corner details contribute to the impressive style of this proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18678. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Janesville, WI - Central Bank of Wisconsin $1 18__ WI-280 G2. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58. The notes from this bank are complex because they increased their capitalization from $25,000 to $125,000 over the tenure of the bank. This is an attractive $1 proof on India paper by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co, New York & Philadelphia. This is an extremely rare untinted proof series from the bank. The issued notes from the bank used red protectors. An allegorical female holds out an ear of corn from a brimming basket resting on a pile of produce. The background shows sailboats in front of a mountain vista. Between the counters at the right end, an oval frame surrounds the portrait of a young woman with a pearl necklace and hair ornament. At the top center arced over the vignette is Capital Stock $100,000. The only proofs from this series known, besides these available Newman Collection examples, are in the Wisconsin Historical Society. Noted as "Hole Punch Canceled" as made. There is petty handling and very faint foxing specks are seen here and there. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $587.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18677. - Janesville, WI - Badger State Bank $1 18__ WI-275 G2b Specimen. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. Janesville had several banks that issued Obsolete notes, and they are all rare. This rarity is printed on bond paper and was used as a Specimen note (not a remainder or leftover) in lieu of a proof by the bank or archive from which it came. Several of these bond paper Specimen notes (with HPC, like a proof) were observed in the Chester L. Krause Collection sales (most were from his mass purchase of the James Bookbinder proof collection). Collectors from Wisconsin will find this a desirable title. This handsomely engraved series by Toppan, Carpenter & Company, New York & Philadelphia was printed on bond paper as used for issued notes. The $1 denomination has a lovely layout. In the charming family scene at center, a small child resting on his father's shoulder pulls on a branch. The parents gaze tenderly as they keep a firm grasp on their little one. At lower left, reclining Agriculture holds up some stalks of wheat. Partially visible at left is an eagle on the global projection. At lower right, in a pose mirroring that of Agriculture, a Native American man holds the barrel of a rifle. Dual red "1" protectors flank the center vignette. Noted as "Cut Cancelled" in the signature blocks and with "Tape Repaired Cancellations and Tears." This extremely rare type was not in the Krause Collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $646.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18676. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Hudson, WI - Hudson City Bank $1 18__ WI-270 G2. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. A very choice and rare Toppan, Carpenter & Company, New York & Philadelphia proof series. This riveting India paper proof on original card displays a dynamic vignette. A highly detailed, energetic port scene at the lower left shows throngs of people on the wharf. Departing passengers on the steamship and train exchange farewells with those remaining behind. The vessel, locomotive and factories behind spew black smoke. A portrait of a veiled woman is in the oval toward the right. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The Krause Collection example was a low-grade issued note. The only other $1 proof we know of in private hands came from the Toppan, Carpenter & Co. archive book we auctioned in the September 2014 Long Beach Signature sale. This is in superior condition, vibrant and bold. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18674.
