- Hudson, WI - Hudson City Bank $1 18__ WI-270 G2. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. A very choice and rare Toppan, Carpenter & Company, New York & Philadelphia proof series. This riveting India paper proof on original card displays a dynamic vignette. A highly detailed, energetic port scene at the lower left shows throngs of people on the wharf. Departing passengers on the steamship and train exchange farewells with those remaining behind. The vessel, locomotive and factories behind spew black smoke. A portrait of a veiled woman is in the oval toward the right. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The Krause Collection example was a low-grade issued note. The only other $1 proof we know of in private hands came from the Toppan, Carpenter & Co. archive book we auctioned in the September 2014 Long Beach Signature sale. This is in superior condition, vibrant and bold. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18674. - Hudson, WI - Farmers Bank at Hudson $5 18__ WI-265 G8a. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. The highest denomination from this impeccably engraved color proof series. Like the $1 previous proof, this is an India paper proof mounted on original card, engraved and printed by Danforth, Wright & Co., New York & Philadelphia. The full red lace tint, using the Cyrus Durand patented devices, crosses the note. The border is a deeper rust-red, with numerous repeating micro-lettered textual denominations. A wide panel at the left has an outlined "5" at the top corner and perpendicular FIVE. The vignettes complement the tint beautifully. A farmer reclines within the enormous sculptural "V" at the center. For a three-dimensional effect, his arm and the bundle of wheat are resting on the stems of the letter, and a mountain vista is seen in the background within. The men at lower right carry farm implements as they stride along. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. A noted "Edge Tear at Bottom Center" is very difficult to see. Another superb presentation from the Danforth, Wright & Co. engraving firm. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18673. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Hudson, WI - Farmers Bank at Hudson $1 18__ WI-265 G2a. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. This is a rare bank with some proofs and a few issued notes known. A full series proof sheet, $1-$2-$3-$5, was sold in the first Krause auction sale and originally came from the 1990 American Banknote Company Archives auction. We believe that sheet is still intact, making the Newman Collection examples among the few individual proofs available from the bank. The series was printed from a stunning and intricately engraved Danforth, Wright & Co. New York & Philadelphia plate on India paper, and mounted to its original cardstock. A full red lace tint, using the Cyrus Durand patented devices, crosses the note. The bordering is a deeper rust-red, with numerous repeating micro-lettered textual denominations. At top center, a farmer guides a plow pulled by two horses wearing blinders. The vignette at bottom right shows telegraph wires stretched along a series of poles. Men and a dog herd cattle in the foreground, and a train traversing a bridge is far behind. An outlined ONE protector is within the color tint. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The cited full four-subject proof sheet from the Krause Collection sold for $17,250 in September 2009. This gorgeous $1 proof appears to be conservatively graded and has a Gem New appearance. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18672. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Howard, WI - Northern Bank $3 18__ WI-260 G6. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63 Apparent. An elegant $3 proof from the $1-$1-$2-$3 plate engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York. Like the bank's companion proofs from the Newman Collection, this is a bold India paper proof mounted on original cardstock. A lively depiction of lunch on the farm is at top center. The mother holds a small child who reaches out to the seated father. An older child decides to stretch out on the ground. At the lower right, a mechanic, sailor and farmer stand with a "3" that is as tall as they. The Krause Collection had a similar proof, also on card. That ex: Schingoethe Collection example realized $1,495 at the September 2009 "First Krause Collection" Stack's sale in Philadelphia. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Very discrete razor cuts are in the signature blocks, one with a slight pull at the lower right edge noted as a "Small Edge Tear at Right." This is not readily noticed, and the overall eye appeal is excellent. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $822.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18671. A superb India paper color proof by Danforth, Wright & Co., New York & Philadelphia. The lighter red lace tint across the note outlines two perpendicular script TEN protectors flanking the vignette. A darker red die is at the bottom center with an outlined protector. A field with farm animals and a mountain vista are in the background of the top center vignette. The young boy pointing seems to be too excited to join his grandfather and the dog in a relaxing moment under the tree. At lower left is a portrait of a young woman holding a dove. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. We only know of one other $10 proof, the example that was on the Krause-American Banknote Company Archives sale sheet.
