- Hillsdale, WI - Kokomo Bank $10 May 25, 1857 WI-250 G6a. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The higher denomination from this two-note series from Hillsdale. A superb India paper color proof by Danforth, Wright & Co., New York & Philadelphia. The lighter red lace tint across the note outlines two perpendicular script TEN protectors flanking the vignette. A darker red die is at the bottom center with an outlined protector. A field with farm animals and a mountain vista are in the background of the top center vignette. The young boy pointing seems to be too excited to join his grandfather and the dog in a relaxing moment under the tree. At lower left is a portrait of a young woman holding a dove. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. We only know of one other $10 proof, the example that was on the Krause-American Banknote Company Archives sale sheet. An exceptional full color proof from the expressive and artistic late imprint. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1527.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18669. - Green Bay, WI - Fox River Bank $1 18__ WI-235 G2b. Specimen. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. Several of the Wisconsin banks may not have asked for proofs, but instead received bond paper Specimen notes with hole punch cancels. This Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York series is an example of that type of Specimen note. The Chester L. Krause Collection had several notes from the genre. Most of his Specimens came from D.C. Wismer via the James Bookbinder acquisition. The layout and vignettes are beautifully styled. The charming scene at lower left shows a Native American princess, with bow, spear and a quiver of arrows, shielding her eyes from the sun. Some deer are nearby at the right but only the buck seems to sense her presence. A canoe and tepees are in the distance. At lower right, seated Liberty wears a laurel wreath and holds a capped liberty pole. Her hand rests on a large "1." Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as prepared at the printer. The Krause Collection had a $1 proof that sold for $2,760 in September 2009. This is an extremely rare, elegant and Gem Specimen note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $822.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18666. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Fox Lake, WI - Bank of Fox Lake $5 July 1, 1857 WI-205 G8. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ. There are Bank of Fox Lake proofs known from the 1855 series, but this is the rarest series from the bank and is not pictured in the Krause Wisconsin book. The only other proof sheet (printed on a $2-$5 sheet configuration by the slightly different imprint, Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York) with the July 1, 1857 date is in the Wisconsin Historical Society. Therefore, this $5 is unique in private hands. A peaceable group of farm animals is at the upper left. To the right is an oval portrait of a young woman. The base vignette shows a wharf motif with an anchor and commercial goods. This is a Superb Gem, and the vignette layout is remarkable. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This is one of the most important black and white proofs from the Newman Wisconsin Obsoletes. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1527.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18665. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Fort Atkinson, WI - Koshkonong Bank $1 January 15, 1859 WI-200 G2a. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is a fabulous Native American title from Wisconsin. Engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company; the vignettes are formed from two predecessor firms. We know of only a few issued notes, and this signed and issued Newman Collection example looks like the finest. The central vignette shows a Native American man paddling a canoe while his wife, at the other end, tends to the baby bundled snugly in a papoose. The vignette was taken from dies by Wellstood, Hanks, Hay & Whiting. The young woman with long hair and ringlets at the lower right was adapted from dies of Jocelyn, Draper, Welsh & Co. The red protector outlines the ONE. The Krause Collection had a $2 issued note with condition flaws. This issued note is perfectly framed, bright, and with strong paper. A beautiful issued note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2585.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18664. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
