- Fort Atkinson, WI - Koshkonong Bank $1 January 15, 1859 WI-200 G2a. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is a fabulous Native American title from Wisconsin. Engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company; the vignettes are formed from two predecessor firms. We know of only a few issued notes, and this signed and issued Newman Collection example looks like the finest. The central vignette shows a Native American man paddling a canoe while his wife, at the other end, tends to the baby bundled snugly in a papoose. The vignette was taken from dies by Wellstood, Hanks, Hay & Whiting. The young woman with long hair and ringlets at the lower right was adapted from dies of Jocelyn, Draper, Welsh & Co. The red protector outlines the ONE. The Krause Collection had a $2 issued note with condition flaws. This issued note is perfectly framed, bright, and with strong paper. A beautiful issued note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2585.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18664. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Fond du Lac, WI - Bank of Fond du Lac $5 18__ WI-190 (G8) UNL. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. The highest denomination from this extremely rare quartet. An India paper proof mounted on its original card from the engraved and printed Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. series. America, as a Native American princess, holds a cornucopia spilling coins as she reclines amid a number of symbolic items: sword, scales, fasces, safe, capped liberty pole and flags. She leans her elbow on a shield. The eagle stands on the globe on which AMERICA is inscribed. At left, an alert hunter and his dog are in the forest. A dog and safe motif is at the lower right. Capital $25,000 is engraved on the plate. No protector and, therefore, unlisted. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made, like the other proof members of this elite set. The only example we know of in private hands. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18663. - Fond du Lac, WI - Bank of Fond du Lac $3 18__ WI-190 (G6) UNL. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. The unlisted $3 proof from this series and the only example we know of in private hands. This India paper proof, mounted on original card, was engraved and printed by the Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. A bold impression, and a striking layout. The vignettes share the common theme of life on the farm. At top left, a boy reassures one of his horses as a train travels by in the distance. At lower left, a woman milks a cow. The barefoot boy at lower right uses the handle of the grain cradle to tote his jacket and shoes. The Capital $25,000 is engraved on the plate. No protector and, therefore unlisted. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. There is a faint wisp of foxing in the right center; otherwise, at first glance the proof appears Gem. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1527.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18662. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
