- Elk Horn, WI - Elk Horn Bank $1 18__ WI-165 G2a. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. A rarely seen Wisconsin title. This proof is likely unique in private hands; the other is on the sheet at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Thoughtfully engraved by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York, it was printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock. The town's emblem of the elk's head is featured prominently at top center. At lower right, Justice is seated on a bale next to the "1" counter on which she rests her hand. Cherubs flank the cartouche containing the signature lines with red ONE protector. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Other than this $1 proof, we know of only the Krause Collection low-grade $1 issued note from the series. The $3 proof from this series, PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent, realized $3,525 in Newman Part VI. This is a very bold proof offering, and the red protector provides great contrast. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1997.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18656. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Eau Claire, WI - Hall & Brothers' Bank $5 18__ WI-150 G8. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The highest denomination from the Newman Collection trio of this title and by far in the finest condition (the $3 denomination was sold at Newman VI). Engraved and printed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago on India paper mounted on original cardstock. The layout is exemplary. Two allegorical females top center flank a shield showing the Mechanic's arm and hammer. At lower left, Justice sits in the bottom of the "5" that is adorned with vines. At lower right is a rarely seen Wellstood vignette of a bearded frontiersman and his dog taking a rest. The Krause Collection had a $5 issued note with protector, but no proofs like these unique examples. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and also "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Wide margins are all around, and deep printing is seen. This is the last available proof from this excellent set. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1351.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18655. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Eau Claire, WI - Hall & Brothers' Bank $2 18__ WI-150 G4. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. A second impressive Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago proof on India paper mounted on original cardstock from this extremely rare bank. The full imprint with the addition of the Chicago office is rarely encountered. This is a deeply inked, very bold impression, with the vignettes on the bright India paper having a three-dimensional effect. In the center is a captivating allegorical scene of seated America and a Native American princess. America is pointing toward the trains and factories of modern civilization at right; the pastoral setting of Native Americans life is at left. The eagle at the lower left has the E PLURIBUS UNUM ribbon in its beak. The seated milkmaid at far right at the upper right holds a large "2." Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The Haxby plate note is in the Wisconsin Historical Society; this is likely the only proof example available to collectors. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18654. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
