- Beloit, WI - Southern Bank $3 185_ WI-65 G4. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. A Superb Gem Proof $3 from this series and likely the only example in private hands; the Haxby plate note is presumably in the Wisconsin Historical Society. This India paper proof mounted on original card by Danforth, Wright & Co. boasts rich, deep printing. The traditional Native American way of life is contrasted with the "progressive" ways of the settlers. A shield showing the sun rising over the water and a banner reading EXCELSIOR divides two groups (note the use of the New York shield for "convenience"). The mother to the left of the shield hugs her little child; a mountain vista is behind. At right, the mother uses a book and globe to educate the children; a cultivated landscape is in the background. A contemplative farmer rests at the lower right. Noted as "Mounted on Cardstock" and also "Hole Punch Cancelled" as seen on nearly all the other proofs from this exemplary offering. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1880.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18643. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Beloit, WI - Southern Bank $1 185_ WI-65 G2. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is another very rare Beloit bank, and it is known to us only as proofs or rare unissued remainders. All have superb layouts with the excellent vignette style often seen on Danforth, Wright & Co. notes. Boldly inked and printed on India paper mounted on original cardstock. In the agricultural scene at top, a farmer sharpens a grain cradle. At the lower left, in an oval floral frame, a milkmaid rests her arm on her pail. Intricate upper corners use the Cyrus Durand patented technology. The Krause Collection sales had only archival remainder $1 and $10 notes from this bank; it had no proofs. The $5 proof had the best layout from the series and a Chief Joseph Brant vignette. Graded PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, it realized $3,055 at the Newman Part VI sale in April 2015. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. A rare and beautiful proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1527.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18642. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Beloit, WI - Bank of Beloit $5 January 2, 1855 WI-50 G8. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ. The highest, and last available, denomination from the present Newman Collection trio and a Gem proof (The $3 denomination was sold in Newman VI.). Like all the others, this is an India paper proof mounted on its original card, and engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. The symmetrical layout shown is a hallmark of this engraving firm. The center is dominated by a large "V" engraved in a sculptural manner. An allegorical female holding a sheaf of wheat sits within. The three-dimensional appearance is enhanced by the foot that peeks out at the bottom and the elbow on which she leans. Holding the fasces, another allegorical figure makes herself comfortable in the "5" at lower right. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The equal of the other members of this illustrious set of Beloit proofs. A final chance to obtain a Newman Collection proof from this extremely rare bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18641. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Beloit, WI - Bank of Beloit $1 January 2, 1855 WI-50 G2. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ. The $1 denomination from an exceptional series of well-crafted proofs engraved and printed from the plates by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. on India paper mounted on original card stock. This is a Superb Gem. The Newman Collection proofs from this bank appear to be the only examples in private hands. In the vignette at the top, a weary shepherd reclines near his flock. Allegorical females are at the ends. Seated Commerce, at left, appears to hold up the "1" die above. At right, America as Minerva holds a shield and supports the flagpole with the furling Stars and Stripes flag. This is from the first series of notes with the bank's capital shown as $35,000 at the top, later to be raised to $60,000 (WI-50 G6a). The $3 Proof from this important series, PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ, realized $3,525 at the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This layout and condition are stunning. - Beaver Dam, WI - Mercantile Bank $2 18__ WI-45 G4. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This India paper Proof, mounted on cardstock, engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., from this series is likely unique in private hands. The other example is confined to the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin. Pigs lead the parade of livestock at top center, but one decides to lie down and rest. The little dog attempts to keep a curious cow moving. The four corner counters are particularly intricate and balance well with the Gothic title at the center, which was used for this bank. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. An important bank and series, not in the Krause Collection or private hands elsewhere. Another unique opportunity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18638. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
