- Monticello, (GA) - William Cook, Post Office in Monticello 6 ? Cents Jan. 3, 1818. PCGS Fine 12. Impressive currency notes sometimes find themselves wrapped within small formats like this piece from an unrecorded, to our knowledge, issuer. This note resided in one of several Virginia Obsolete currency albums in the Newman Collection. However, new research we have received analyzing contemporary newspaper accounts indicates that this scrip is most likely from Georgia; Monticello is the Jasper county seat. Post office notes, especially from the War of 1812 era, are a very rare class and have been collected for generations by both currency and stamp collectors. A compact layout shows an eagle flying with an olive branch at the upper right, appropriate for its issue after the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. The obligation is underneath with title. An ornamental border is at far left. Serial letter B. It has a clear date and nicely penned signature. This well-margined note is in pleasing condition and has great paper integrity. This issuer was not in the Allan Dorris Georgia collection, which attests to its great rarity. An inspiring piece of early American currency. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18622. - Lexington, VA - Bank of Rockbridge $2 May 28, 1861 VA-115 G22, Jones & Littlefield BL15-17. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is a very rare locally printed note, one of three different $2 types dated May 28, 1861, and none of these are illustrated in Haxby. The three different designs might just be different plate positions from the same sheet. Printed on blue paper in deep black ink. A small vignette of a War of 1812 soldier, looking rather like a toy soldier, is at the right. At the base is a locomotive. The title is across with TWO within cartouche above. TWO DOLLARS is perpendicular at the left edge. Noted with "Edge Splits," but extraordinarily vibrant. This is listed as Rarity-7F (2-4 known) in Jones & Littlefield and is the first we have seen. The type was not in the comprehensive 1983 Affleck Virginia Collection sale. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1762.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18621. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Howardsville, VA - Bank of Howardsville $7 March 29, 1859 VA-105 G4a, Jones & Littlefield BH25-25. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Virginia has the most numerous banks that issued these intriguing $6, $7, $8, and $9 notes. They were also used by banks in North Carolina, particularly in the Bank of Cape Fear branch banking system, and to lesser extent in South Carolina. This is a very attractive Wellstood, Hay & Whiting series and a rare $7 issued note from a bank that, for some reason, did not issue $9 notes. A farmhand steadies a horse as a train passes in the distance. A large barrel on its side reads "Z.R. Lewis/Tobacco/#35." An oval Henry Clay portrait is at left between numeric and textual counters. The state seal is at the right. A safe vignette is at the base. A red protector SEVEN is at the bottom. This has a Rarity-6H rating in the Virginia book, receiving premium value for its denomination. We have observed several and would consider a census of ten to twenty as the appropriate range for the type. Noted with a "Repaired Edge Tear at Right." This is a bright note overall and one of the finer examples we have seen. The past few years has established this as four-figure note genre and type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18620. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Fairfax, Culpeper Court-House, VA - Culpeper Agricultural & Manufacturing Society $5 July 4, 1817 Jones & Littlefield BC45-10. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is a prize note from the Virginia Obsolete currency canon and is the plate note in the Jones & Littlefield reference. The northern Virginia location is tremendously important historically and we believe this Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. engraved series note is unique. This unincorporated bank was omitted by Haxby in his listings. However, this is similar in style and obligations to some Pennsylvania company "bank" notes. An agricultural vignette showing a plow and cattle is at the top between "5" counters. End panels are intricately designed. The FIVE in the cartouche at left is over a leaf and vine pattern. At the right, VIRGINIA is in the cartouche. An oval "V" die is at the bottom center. Noted with "Small Edge Tears; Hinge on Back" only. The condition is outstanding and this is the Virginia "JL" plate note. This was not in Affleck or any other collections we surveyed. This is perhaps the most important Virginia note in the Newman VII sale. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3525.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18619. - Charlottesville, VA - Monticello Bank $100 Sept. 6, 1860 VA-45 G30a Jones & Littlefield BC25-40. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The lesser denominations from this American Bank Note Company engraved and printed series are encountered frequently. The $100 is the highest denomination from the issuer and is much rarer. This very dynamic note shows a detailed vignette of Monticello, engraved for the bank, at lower left. Two men in formal wear stand on the portico. An oval framed portrait of Jefferson is at lower right. The micro-lettered guilloche is across top center with bold 100, Lower right "C" and upper corner surrounds are in vermillion. There are some scattered specks noted as "Minor Rust Stains." We have handled a few examples including a PMG Very Fine 25 note at the 2013 CSNS Signature sale that realized $3,290. The color is especially vibrant on this very appealing note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3172.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18618. - Alexandria, VA - Exchange Bank of Virginia $15 Branch Payable May 7, 1851 VA-145 G31 SENC, Jones & Littlefield BN05-62. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. The Exchange Bank of Virginia, parented in Norfolk, issued numerous home and branch notes for over two decades. This very unusual $15 note was issued by the Alexandria branch. A beautifully engraved Rawdon, Wright & Hatch set of plates with an impressive face layout and blue back. At top center, a clipper ship navigates the choppy seas and a view of the Virginia State Capitol is seen in the far distance at left. Oval portraits are flanking: Washington at left and John Marshall at right. At lower left, adapted from the state seal, Virtus stands with her foot on a figure representing Tyranny. Between the counters at right, Vulcan is at work. The blue back is composed of four vertical dies and a rectangle across with shaded THE/EXCHANGE/BANK in center. The branch location for the type is unknown and the Charles Affleck Collection sale held by NASCA in 1983 had only one note of this type, which was from Norfolk. Noted with "Minor Rust Stains at Right; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." We have seen only a few issued Exchange Bank $15 notes, auctioning three, and this might be the finest observed. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2702.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18617. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
