- Philadelphia, PA - Bank of North America $50 18__ PA-465 G250, Hoober 305-64. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63 Apparent. This is an impressively engraved Toppan, Carpenter & Co. India paper proof from this artistic series. America, as a Native American princess, holds a cornucopia spilling coins as she reclines amid a number of symbolic items: sword, scales, fasces, safe, capped liberty pole and flags. She leans her elbow on the Stars and Stripes shield. The eagle straddles the shield and the globe with AMERICA inscribed. Numeric counters are in all corners. Sculptural ends show center vignettes in ovals. At left is a Lafayette portrait. Justice with sword and scales is at right. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with "Repairs." The verso repairs match the workmanship of the other proof denominations and they certainly share the same prior pedigree before their care within the Newman Collection. An inspired high denomination proof from the famous bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $540.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18554. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Philadelphia, PA - Bank of North America $20 December 17, 1792 Contemporary Counterfeit PA-465 C214, Hoober 305-59. PCGS Very Fine 30. The Bank of North America was the first bank chartered by Congress in 1781 and commenced issuing demand notes in 1782, launching the Obsolete banknote issuing period. The earliest stockholders included several Founding Fathers. It was referred to as "The Bank" early on, due to its official functions involving the Federal government. The bank issued several series, evolving by using different engraving imprints and styles over eight decades to thwart counterfeiters and issue superbly crafted notes. It eventually became the National Bank of North America in 1864. It "exists" today within Wells Fargo and its acquisition of the Wachovia several years ago. This is an important contemporary counterfeit type and one of the earliest dated Obsolete banknotes, genuine or counterfeit. This second series and type is listed in The Early Paper Money of America (5th edition, page 362). An extraordinary condition "B" position contemporary counterfeit and the Newman plate note. The original, without imprint, is copied well. Engraved obligations cover most of the note. At upper left is an oval counter "20" encircled by thirteen stars. There is a lighter "20" to its right, showing to the back, and dark oval die with "XX" in left center, At the far left end is perpendicular TWENTY in shaded letters under an ornately engraved BANK. The printed back has ornate, mirror image TWENTY that shows through the translucent paper to the face as a protector. There are no genuine issued notes known and there is one "A" position face proof plated in Haxby. Noted as "Pen Cancelled" and this is only a comparatively light "X" in the left center. An extraordinary note boasting the important Newman Collection pedigree and plate note stature. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3290.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18552. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Philadelphia, PA - Mechanics Bank in the City & County of Philadelphia $1 April 15, 1862 PA-455 G34a, Hoober 305-398. PCGS Very Fine 25PPQ. This rarely seen type is signed only by the cashier and had no space for a bank president signature as commonly seen. A splendid layout by the American Bank Note Co., Philadelphia uses its great color to contrast the vignettes. The eponymous mechanic's arm is shown at center with forearm raised as it grips a hammer. Green "1" protectors are over textual counters at both sides. Numeric counters are in the upper corners. Henry Clay is at lower left, and at lower right, a young girl whose hair is adorned with grapes and grape leaves. The engraved series date is in the location where the cashier would normally sign. The cashier signed at the lower right. The five-digit serial number 22568 validates a large circulation for the type. Most were redeemed by the bank or the later National Bank title. An artistically rendered Obsolete banknote in superb condition. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1997.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18551. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
