- Tahlequah, Indian Territory (OK) - The Cherokee Nation - Treasury Note $5 June 11, 1862 Cr. CHR N-4, Burgett-8, Durand IT-97. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. A much rarer, and the highest, denomination from this historic bi-lingual Indian Nation series. Like other denominations, a uniface note printed on very thin, partly translucent rag paper. Without imprint, but now attributed to John Candy. An intricate, ornamental four leaf clover pattern, different from the $1, forms the top and bottom frame lines. End panels at left and right, composed of linked oval ornaments, enclose the denomination FIVE DOLLARS, in English at the left, and translated into the Sequoyah alphabet at the right. The bolded numeric denomination is seen at upper left. The obligation, bolded FIVE DOLLARS, and its translation in dialect are across. The additional obligation at top, "Issued by authority of Law in lieu of Notes of the Confederate States," is continued along the bottom margin, "which are retained in the Treasury for the redemption hereof." Signed by Joshua Ross as clerk and Lewis Ross as treasurer. The Shull-Criswell Rarity is 11 (2-4 known). The denomination was missing from Ford, Schingoethe and Ball-Richmond auctions. Broad margins are all around and the note has the appearance of Choice Uncirculated. A stunning note, the finest from the series we have seen, and an impeccable rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $9987.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18545. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
