- Plymouth, NH - Pemigewasset Bank $3 Jan. 2, 1826 NH-255 G12 SENC. PCGS Fine 15. The Newman Obsolete banknote collection has been a treasure trove for new discoveries and research opportunities. The two notes from this tongue-twister title are the first we have seen and confirm the Haxby listings which were SENC. The Whitman Encyclopedia discusses the bank history from its 1825 founding to into the early 1840s, when its internal corruption was exposed and a court case ensued.. However, it appears early on the bank issued notes and readily redeemed them. The exceptional rarity of the notes seems to indicate that the bank redeemed its circulation by 1848, while still in business, to wind up affairs as enacted by the state legislature. The early Perkins Plate style with oval border encloses micro-lettering, titles, obligations, denomination and location. Intricate half-die panels are at each end. Outside corners with "3" counters are on shaded lathe work. This is a unique discovery note and certainly one of the greatest Perkins Plate notes from New England. A high-grade note and a priceless title for the specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2350.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18486. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Nashua, NH - Pennichuck Bank $2 Jan. 1, 1856 NH- 215 G4a. PCGS Fine 15PPQ. The bank has a great Native American title, and decades ago it was nearly impossible to get a note from here. A few notes surfaced at a Boston show, but quickly found homes, and few were of this quality. Superbly styled by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson/New England Bank Note Co. The wide vignette at the top shows two seated allegorical females, Prosperity and Liberty. One holds stalks of wheat; the other, a capped liberty pole. A shield showing a small ship on the water is between them. The eagle's perch appears to be balanced on the topmost point of the shield. The banner below bears the motto PROSPERITY & LIBERTY. A very tall female figure is at the left end above a TWO counter. She holds a flowering plant with one hand and a mirror with the other. A Franklin Pierce portrait is in an oval frame at the lower right. A red protector TWO is at the bottom. The note has very sharp signatures. This is one of the finest notes we have seen from this rare bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18485. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Dover, NH - Strafford Bank (2nd) $20 Jan. 4, 1847 NH-75 G68. PCGS Fine 12. The $20 denomination from this issued and cancelled earlier series note, printed from the engraved New England Bank Note Co. plates. This is a rare type with the Whitman Encyclopedia plated example credited to the "Swasey Collection." A majestic eagle in an octagonal frame is at the top between "XX" counters. In the upper corners are "20" counters. At lower left, seated Moneta holds open a chest with one hand and keeps a group of papers in place on her knee with the other. Ships at sail are at lower right. A fully issued and dated note, neatly "Hole Punch Cancelled" on the signatures. This is a key denomination on this series and we found no sales records for the type. - Dover, NH - Strafford Bank (2nd) $10 June 2, 1851 NH-75 G60. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is a rare Toppan, Carpenter & Co. issued note without a tint. Agriculture, reclining against a bale, holds up some stalks of wheat. In the background, men load hay onto a wagon as a train passes in the far distance. A John Marshall portrait in an oval frame is in the lower left. At top right, a young woman holding a sheaf of wheat turns her head rearward, as if someone has spoken to her. Since her hat is on her back, suspended from its ribbons, she needs to use her hand to shield her eyes from the sun. Signed and an early issue date, without a tint. Known as proofs and as cancelled notes like this. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and with "Minor Edge Damage at Bottom Left." This is another rare and underrated type from the bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $470.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18483. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
