- Dover, NH - Strafford Bank (2nd) $10 June 2, 1851 NH-75 G60. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is a rare Toppan, Carpenter & Co. issued note without a tint. Agriculture, reclining against a bale, holds up some stalks of wheat. In the background, men load hay onto a wagon as a train passes in the far distance. A John Marshall portrait in an oval frame is in the lower left. At top right, a young woman holding a sheaf of wheat turns her head rearward, as if someone has spoken to her. Since her hat is on her back, suspended from its ribbons, she needs to use her hand to shield her eyes from the sun. Signed and an early issue date, without a tint. Known as proofs and as cancelled notes like this. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and with "Minor Edge Damage at Bottom Left." This is another rare and underrated type from the bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $470.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18483. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Brownville, NE - Nemaha Valley Bank $1 Oct. 1, 1859 NE-10 G4a. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is from the rare series of notes engraved and printed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting. The notes printed by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. are readily encountered. The style is exceptional, and this has an unusual red color "Lazy 1" at the top center. The theme of progress is illustrated by the contrast (and similarities) of the farmers at left and the Native Americans at right. It is interesting that both couples were depicted with their dogs. An oval portrait of a woman wearing a hair ornament is at the base. This is an impeccably styled Territory of Nebraska type. Signed, but we believe falsely. We sold a raw example for $2,760 at the 2008 FUN auction, and that note had previously realized over $2,000 at a 2003 Smythe sale. This superbly engraved type is seldom offered, and this is a deeply inked, sharp example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18479. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- St. Louis, MO - Union Bank of Missouri $100 Branch Payable MO-65 G96a SENC. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. The highest denomination from the bank and series. A stunning and inspired engraved plate by the American Bank Note Company printed this Obsolete banknote jewel. The color and the vignettes work in tandem to create one of the most beautiful late designs from the Obsolete banknote era. To the right of the arced vermillion title a large vignette shows Liberty displaying a large shield on which is a bas-relief bust of George Washington in profile. To the left of the shield, a Continental soldier, leaning on the barrel of his rifle, looks on pensively; his tricorn hat is on the ground behind him. Two Native Americans also ponder the portrait. Under the title, America, holding a capped liberty pole floats in the clouds with a shield and olive branch. The eagle beside her is perched on the fasces. A Millard Fillmore portrait is at the lower right. In vermillion are the title, upper right counter surround, and pair of small "100" protectors over the signature block. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with "Mounting Remnants on Back; Small Edge Tears." This is visually striking and was a key proof obtained from D.C. Wismer. This has all the hallmarks of a proof with wide appeal, and we expect serious competition for the opportunity to be its next caretaker. This Missouri proof merits the distinction of being a legendary piece of Obsolete currency. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $61687.50. - St. Louis, MO - Union Bank of Missouri $50 Branch Payable 18__ MO-65 G94a SENC. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. This Union Bank of Missouri $50 India paper color proof and the following $100 are the most elite proofs from the entire State of Missouri Obsolete note canon. They were obtained over 75 years ago from D.C. Wismer and have been treasured since. Now they will become centerpieces of another distinguished collection. This superb American Bank Note Company proof has subtle color details. A trio of allegorical female figures appears under the arced bank title. Holding a caduceus, the figure at left is about to crown seated Industry, who holds a diagram and pen. A gear is seen behind the bench on which she sits. Behind the two, at center, Agriculture also holds a crown of laurel leaves. An industrialized city is seen in the background at right. An oval portrait of Henry Clay is at lower left; at lower right, the portrait of a Native American man with a bear claw necklace and feather headdress. Hatched vermillion "L protectors flank the vignette at the bottom. The upper counters have vermillion surrounds. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with "Mounting Remnants on Back," attesting to the Wismer pedigree. Well margined, and only some trivial handling is seen. Visually impressive and unique to our knowledge. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $11750.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18477.
