- St. Louis, MO - Union Bank of Missouri $100 Branch Payable MO-65 G96a SENC. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. The highest denomination from the bank and series. A stunning and inspired engraved plate by the American Bank Note Company printed this Obsolete banknote jewel. The color and the vignettes work in tandem to create one of the most beautiful late designs from the Obsolete banknote era. To the right of the arced vermillion title a large vignette shows Liberty displaying a large shield on which is a bas-relief bust of George Washington in profile. To the left of the shield, a Continental soldier, leaning on the barrel of his rifle, looks on pensively; his tricorn hat is on the ground behind him. Two Native Americans also ponder the portrait. Under the title, America, holding a capped liberty pole floats in the clouds with a shield and olive branch. The eagle beside her is perched on the fasces. A Millard Fillmore portrait is at the lower right. In vermillion are the title, upper right counter surround, and pair of small "100" protectors over the signature block. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with "Mounting Remnants on Back; Small Edge Tears." This is visually striking and was a key proof obtained from D.C. Wismer. This has all the hallmarks of a proof with wide appeal, and we expect serious competition for the opportunity to be its next caretaker. This Missouri proof merits the distinction of being a legendary piece of Obsolete currency. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $61687.50. - St. Louis, MO - Union Bank of Missouri $50 Branch Payable 18__ MO-65 G94a SENC. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. This Union Bank of Missouri $50 India paper color proof and the following $100 are the most elite proofs from the entire State of Missouri Obsolete note canon. They were obtained over 75 years ago from D.C. Wismer and have been treasured since. Now they will become centerpieces of another distinguished collection. This superb American Bank Note Company proof has subtle color details. A trio of allegorical female figures appears under the arced bank title. Holding a caduceus, the figure at left is about to crown seated Industry, who holds a diagram and pen. A gear is seen behind the bench on which she sits. Behind the two, at center, Agriculture also holds a crown of laurel leaves. An industrialized city is seen in the background at right. An oval portrait of Henry Clay is at lower left; at lower right, the portrait of a Native American man with a bear claw necklace and feather headdress. Hatched vermillion "L protectors flank the vignette at the bottom. The upper counters have vermillion surrounds. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with "Mounting Remnants on Back," attesting to the Wismer pedigree. Well margined, and only some trivial handling is seen. Visually impressive and unique to our knowledge. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $11750.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18477. - St. Louis, MO - Mechanics Bank $50 18__ MO-20 G80a SENC. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is a stunning Danforth, Wright & Co., New-York & Philad. India paper proof on original cardstock, and we believe it to be one of two known examples. The design type in Haxby was based on Wismer and the earlier Gynne & Day period Bank Note Reporter description. This marvelous beauty was the top of the two-subject proof sheet from the 1990 American Bank Note Company Archive auction, lot 854. One of the most impressive Danforth imprint family's allegorical vignettes is seen at the top center. Wielding paintbrushes, mallet and chisel, and a compass, the three allegorical figures seem to be putting the finishing touches on a bust of George Washington. Mesmerizing vermillion "50" counters are in the upper corners. An oval Henry Clay portrait is at lower left; at lower right is a circular steamboat at landing scene. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Penciled "64" at upper right of wide card for identification. The bottom margin is tight, otherwise this looks like a Gem. Another stunning color proof from a rarely encountered state and bank. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $5875.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18474. - St. Louis, MO - Mechanics Bank $20 18__ MO-20 G78a. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. Notes from the Mechanics Bank of St. Louis are rare, whether issued or as a proofs. This is a very striking Danforth, Wright & Co., New-York & Philad. India paper proof, mounted on original cardstock. The Missouri Capitol from the period, and environs, are beautifully engraved at top center. The building is rendered in great detail, and the scale is demonstrated by the addition of pedestrians, horses and carriages. The jets of water shooting up from the fountains further enliven the scene. Two little farm girls are idealized in the oval at lower left. They provide a pleasant counterpoint to the stern male portrait of bank president Joseph Charless at the right. Intricate vermillion color dies using the Durand patents are at the top corners. A micro-lettered vermillion guilloche is across bottom center. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled " and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. Grading notes a "Small Edge Tear at Left." This "D" bottom position proof appears to have been part of the four-subject 1981 Vacca Sale sheet. There was another four-subject sheet in the 1990 American Bank Note Company auction. This has a superbly crafted presence and bold colors. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18473. - St. Louis, MO - Bank of the State of Missouri at Fayette $10 18__ MO-60 G114. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 55. This is another stunning Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. with engraved design, and a rare India paper proof. Represented on the stirring top central vignette is the steamboat Zebulon M. Pike, the first steamboat to arrive as far north, via the Mississippi, as St. Louis on August 2, 1817. The sky in the serene vignette at top center has a painterly quality. Townspeople gather at the shore to watch the steamboat PIKE sail by. However, the Native American crouching at left instead seems to be studying the fellow standing nearby. Ornately framed male portraits, George Rogers Clark at the left and Daniel Boone at the right, appear at the ends between "X" counters. Although without back stamp hinges, this note is from the early Wismer acquisition. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. A quasi-historical vignette type and another handsome proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1997.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18472. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
