- Vicksburg, MS - Vicksburg Exchange & Banking Co. Post Note $10 18__ MS-215 G8, Kraus 20779, Leggett-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is an exceedingly rare and important Mississippi title that we have never seen or cataloged. We believe it is now being published for the first time and, like so many notes from the Newman Collection, creates a key opportunity to obtain an Obsolete treasure. Cited in Haxby, but without an image and, of course, assigned a catalog value which meant little then or now. This is a mysterious issue that was likely created for "bankers" with their own intentions paramount. The imprint and style of Western Bank Note Co./Woodruff & Mason, Cincinnati is seen in the vignettes and layout. Above the curving title, and between two "X" counters, we once again encounter our hunter, used by this imprint, and his dog in the wilderness. End panels show the "X" above and TEN below, with an allegorical female with sword between. The post note engraved text is at top and engraved "in Mississippi Bank Notes" at bottom. Noted by grading are "Edge Damage; Falsely Filled in; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." The note is a remainder, and falsely accomplished in thick pen. However, it is the only example we have seen. Many of the rare Newman collection Mississippi types were missing from even the comprehensive Byron Cook collection sales sold by Smythe. The less than perfect state of preservation yields to this note's first public offering. A Mississippi Obsolete note trophy. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $4230.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18457. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Vicksburg, MS - Bank of Vicksburg $10 18__ MS-210 (G54) UNL, Kraus 4420, Leggett -UNL. Remainder. PCGS About New 53. This is an unlisted type in Haxby and Leggett. It comes from a series that was partially unknown until lot 828 of the 1990 American Banknote Company Archive sale appeared in the print catalog in the manner of a four-subject sheet of $10-$15-$20-$25, confirming all the denominations from it. A beautifully engraved plate was prepared by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty to print the series. At top center, an allegorical female is seated with an anvil and mallet; she holds a stylus and tablet, and a diagram of weights and balances. Sculptural lathe work shows perpendicular "TEN" at left and cameo dies at the right, each with a letter on them spelling "T E N." This $10 is not to be confused with the home demand note, as we mentioned, and is new to the collecting fraternity. This is a worthy companion to the series $15 example we sold in Newman Part VI for $3,995. Rendered exquisitely and an important Vicksburg type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1880.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18456. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Vicksburg, MS - Commercial and Rail Road Bank of Vicksburg $100 Dec. 5, 1838 Post Check MS-205-Not Listed, Kraus 19621h, Leggett 23. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This is an interesting and very rare series from the issuer. Not considered a banknote by Haxby and relegated to his "not listed category," though this clearly circulated. It is a Leggett and Kraus listed note and fits nearly all the criteria of circulating money used in the period. The $100 would be paid to an individual or order. Penned is: "Twelve Months" after, and this was payable at "the Girard Bank, Philadelphia" with interest. A superb Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. style plate was used to print the series. At top right, Commerce is seated at the shore holding a capped liberty pole. The eagle to her left, with wings partially raised, looks at her as he somehow grips the top of the Stars and Stripes shield with his talons. At the bottom left, a man at a wharf holds the flagpole of the stars and stripes, which partially drapes him. There is a star on each collar point. He holds his hat aloft as if in greeting. Noted with "Hinge and Mounting Remnants on Back." The verso shows penned endorsements. We would think there are only a few known of a type like this, and it is listed as a Rarity-7 (1-5 known on the SPMC scale). The rarity and issuer desirability was certainly confirmed when we sold a similarly graded example for $2,820 at our 2014 CSNS Signature Sale. The face eye appeal is considerable and its pedigree excellent. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18455. - Vicksburg, MS - Tombigby Rail Road Company (Columbus) $5 Feb. 23, 1837 MS-60 G34, Kraus 10262a, Leggett-UNL. PCGS Fine 12. There are several railroad companies in Mississippi that acted as banks, and this was a well-known one. The Columbus home location demand notes are encountered. However, this is from an extremely rare series of written "three" days after date post notes that were payable at the Commercial & Rail Road Bank of Vicksburg." It is the only example we have seen and, though priced in Haxby, it is not illustrated. The other denominations in Haxby are all SENC. Like demand notes, this was printed from engraved plates by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch. An interesting vignette is positioned at the top, left of center, between two "5" counters. As a number of steamboats sail away, a very large alligator ventures into the water. At top right, the classic vignette of Moneta, Mercury and the griffin. The base vignette shows an armadillo. An important note type and tremendous opportunity for serious Southern note collectors. Mississippi notes were very active in the Newman Part VI sale and have sustained a strong level of collecting fervor for decades. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2820.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18454. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Natchez, MS - Commercial Bank of Natchez $1000 18__ MS-160 G24, Kraus 4011p, Leggett-UNL. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ. This is a rare and significant demand note denomination printed from the Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty plates. Liberty, portrayed as a scantily clad allegorical female, holds a capped liberty pole as she sits on a rock in the water. Next to her, an eagle grips the Stars and Stripes shield. In the distance, ships are at sail. At each end is an inwardly facing perpendicular ONE THOUSAND on sculptural lathe work. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. This proof is new to the collecting fraternity and it joins only two others we have confirmed. Only the faintest hints of handling prevent this from being a technical Gem. Ex: Eric P. - Natchez, MS - Commercial Bank of Natchez $5 Branch Payable 18__ MS-160 G150, Kraus 4020p, Leggett 34. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58. A superbly crafted India paper proof printed from Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty engraved plates. This series had branch payable lines toward the bottom. Classic American patriotism is featured in an allegory of two cherubs at the shore appearing to vie for control of the Stars and Stripes flag as a clipper ship passes by. Numerical counters are to the right and left. End panels show perpendicular FIVE counters. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. The handling is trivial and the margins complete. We have sold one other example, graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64, in the 2012 Fall Dallas ANA Sale for $2,233. This boasts the same eye appeal as that proof. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18452. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
