- New Iberia, LA - Confederate Hotel 25 Cents Sept. 26, 1862. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is another extreme rarity and fascinating title. Printed on thick green rag paper with the imprint of "L.T. Burnett, Printer." The title is at the top and obligations across the center, with the engraved city and date. The left end floral pattern encloses the cartouche showing "25 CENTS." At the right end, the floral pattern edge matches the left. A red protector "25 Cts." is at center. Burnett did much printing in the area at this time, and the similarity of his style and vignettes can be seen on a few different issues here in this Newman Collection Part VII sale. Noted with "Edge and Internal Tears; Minor Stains." A solid note overall with only minor flaws as noted. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $588.68. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18338. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Nachitoches, LA - Louis Dupleix, Parish of Natchitoches $5 December 20, 1862. Remainder. PCGS About New 50. This is an intriguing private scrip note that merits some study from several platforms. It is not a Parish note, but a private note from Dupleix, using the Parish title in a prominent location. Printed on white bond paper by Natchitoches Union Print, the note might be a lithographers "proof" and probably was saved as a sample. It has full red color back with blue FIVE/DOLLARS at the center, this printed perpendicular to the face. Within the left end panel between FIVE DOLLARS, a young woman wearing a hat and sailor shirt is rowing and looking out at the viewer. Titles, Parish, and obligation are across the center. This is a beautiful note, and the condition is stupendous. We know of a $3 issued note from the issuer and date, but a different series, that sold in the Smythe Sale #100 for $418 with damage, This note has great character and rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $493.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18337. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Nachitoches, LA - J.N. Burdin $1 Jan. 25, 1863. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. An extremely rare private scrip that is another exciting discovery in the Newman Collection. Printed on brown paper and without an imprint. At top center a steamboat with a very large flag sails along. Issuer, denomination and obligation are across. A swirling ribbon-like border is all around and a cartouche is formed at left and right by decorative linear elements. Textual denominations are within. Noted with "Minor Rust Stains." This note is bold and vibrant, with the assigned technical grade conservative for its tremendous eye appeal. A top caliber Louisiana scrip note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1880.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18336. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Livingston Parish, LA - Parish of Livingston 50 Cents Feb. 18, 1863. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Livingston Parish notes are rare and they always seem to be in demand. Strong sales results over the years bear that out. This is an interesting fractional denomination printed on the back of a blue paper official document; a small section of lettering remains. With the "Republic Print. Columbus, Miss." imprint. The title, obligation, date and signature are in the center. All are contained within a border around the perimeter composed of linear and floral designs with bows at all corners. An odd green protector center of "50 CTS!" is our best interpretation. Noted with "Repairs; Minor Stains." This is a pretty solid note, and the flaws are normal for many Civil War scrip notes. We sold a choice grade PCGS Very Fine 25 example at the 2013 CSNS Signature sale for $1,763. This is a lesser grade note, though it is enhanced by its strong pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18335. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Lake Providence, LA - W.M. Shaw, Wharf-boat $1 May 15, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. An extremely rare town and issuer. The note and series are the first seen by us. Printed on the back of part of a Providence, La. municipal draft form, the issuer mostly visible. As befits the title, the vignette at upper left shows a steamboat at sail adjacent to the location and date. The obligation is across the center under a bold yellow ONE DOLLAR protector (this color and style is similar to some Parish of Carroll notes). The left end panel shows ONE DOLLAR perpendicular in a cartouche. A decorative border is all around. There is another series issued by Shaw and printed on thin, translucent paper without protector or vignettes. We handled a 10 cents note from the series at our 2008 Long Beach auction, ex: Norman Collection, that realized $4,888. This is a different type and might be the only other note from this issuer. Noted with a "Small Edge Split at Bottom Center." The minor flaw is overwhelmed by the vibrant color and strong paper quality. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3290.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18334. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
