- Pensacola, FL - Bank of Pensacola $3 May 4, 1840 FL-50 G12a, Benice 18. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 PPQ. The third series, like the first, was engraved by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, New-York and is especially well crafted. This is very choice and a superb example. Using the clouds to support his weight, Archimedes (in the guise of Atlas), at top center, uses a mountain peak as a fulcrum to lever the world. Moneta (cited also as Providence and Peace) is featured in the center of the left end panel between downward facing "3" counters. At right, between THREE above and "3" below is standing Proserpine leaning on a pillar showing a "3" while holding a sheaf of wheat. A Native American paddling a canoe is at the base. Crisp and vibrant, exceptionally well framed all around and with the appearance of Choice Uncirculated. The finest we have seen. This is a remarkable ambassador of the 1830s period banknote artistic craft. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1057.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18282. - Panama, FL - East Florida Steam Saw Mill $1 Feb. 1, 1825 Benice-5. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is great territorial period rarity from the Newman Collection and is much superior to the plated example in the Benice reference on page 115; that note is missing a chunk off the bottom left. The type was not in the Harley L. Freeman collection sale at Central States in 1977. It is a well-engraved intaglio note with the imprint of Rawdon, Wright & Co. At top center, Minerva sits between a classically garbed woman and a man who appears unclothed. They are at the shore among shipping goods and a cornucopia spilling coins. On either side are "1" counters. The left end panel shows oval lathe work with a ONE counter at the center. At the right end, an oval portrait of Lafayette appears in the center. This example has solid paper, and is fully signed and well margined. Noted only with "Minor Rust Stains," and we stress the word "minor." An exceptional piece and one of the finest signed notes from an issue with very few known. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $4465.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18281. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Fernandina, FL - Bank of Fernandina $20 Dec. 1, 1859 FL-20 G6a Benice 6. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The bank is scarce and high-grade notes are difficult to find. This is a well-engraved American Bank Note Co. printed series with vibrant red end panels. In the large, central vignette, the engineer is clearly seen as the train chugs along. The bold end panels show engraved "20" counters above and "XX" below. At both ends, perpendicular elements are outlined by the red tint, with "XX" at left and "20" at right. The elegant black lathe work adds an extra layer of complexity. Noted with "Minor Mounting Remnants on Back," but it faces up as a higher-grade note. We have seen inferior notes realize well over $1,000 in recent years. This boasts great eye appeal and pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18280. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Alafia, FL - Antoine Wordehoff 25 Cents Aug. 8, 1842 Benice 3A. PCGS Very Fine 20. This is a rare scrip note, using a style peculiar to some Florida issuers. Printed from a crude local plate on brown rag paper in a small, wide format size. This simple design shows a diminutive vignette of a gunboat at the top. Large, solid "25" counters are at both sides. This is an exceptional example, with broad margins and a very sharp signature. This is top condition and Ron Benice in his Florida Paper Money An Illustrated History 1817-1937 (McFarland & Co., 2008)) rates this a Rarity-7 (4-12 known). Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1762.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18279. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Washington, DC - Bullion Bank $5 Oct. 30, 1861 DC- 170 G8a. PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ. The Bullion Bank series engraved and printed by the National Bank Note Co. is much rarer than the New York Bank Note Co. notes with green backs. Only $5 and $10 notes were printed and they are scarce in all grades, but very rare in this lofty state. The design of this note starkly contrasts with that of the previous early District notes. At upper left, a couple stands outside Washington's Tomb at Mount Vernon. At lower right is a well-executed portrait of George Washington in an oval frame. At top center, under the curving title, an elegant woman is portrayed. Her elaborate hairstyle is complemented by a veil and wreath. The designs flow perfectly with the impressive vermillion color frame and guilloche work. Its $10 series companion from the Newman Part VI sale realized $3,055 in Extremely Fine 45PPQ in April 2015. Though not as rare as the $10, this note is just stunning and the finest we have seen. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18278. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Washington, DC - Bank of the United States $2 Nov. 25, 1852 DC-370 G12a. PCGS Very Fine 20. This is a Washington title that is not often encountered. The title certainly was meant to evoke an official status, but it is considered fraudulent by modern note researchers. At left, beneath the curving title, an eagle with wings up, gripping the symbols of war and peace, stands upon the Stars and Stripes shield. In the distance are clipper ships and a sidewheel steamer. A male portrait in an oval is at the right. At lower left is a Roman numeral counter. At the right end, a numeric counter is above and textual counter below the District registration seal. A sidewheel steamer is at the base. Though light, a red TWO protector is present. The signatures match those on the Haxby plate note examples from the series. Problem free and a handsome rarity.
