- Tuscon, AZ - Lord & Williams, Tucson, Arizona Territory 50 Cents No Date (Ca. 1870s-80s) Durand AZT-6. Remainder. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. Arizona Territory scrip notes are rarely offered and are traditionally the domain of advanced collectors. As with all the notes from the series, printed on both sides on sturdy bond paper. This note is finely lithographed with the imprint of M. Thalmessinger, Stationer, 387 & 389 Broadway, N.Y. on the face. At the left is the Columbia portrait in an oval; titles are in the center; a counter is at lower right. The ornate green back has a shield shaped emblem with "50 CENTS" on two lines in the center. The note is not dated or signed. Directory ads from the period indicate that partners Charles H. Lord, M.D. and W.W. Williams did business in several areas, acting as exchange brokers and bankers as well. The end of the mining boom was the beginning of the firm's demise, and it failed on October 27, 1881. The resulting loan foreclosures from the Bank of California to Lord & Williams left the exchange holders and specie depositors with nothing. Observed printed denominations are 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents, as well as $1 and $5 (the Ford XX example is the only $5 known,). No issued notes are known from the series. This is a full-bodied example with normal soiling for the grade. Noted with "Edge and Internal Splits and Tears." This is a desirable Arizona note and an excellent representative of Western Territorial paper money. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1116.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18266. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Mobile, AL - City Bank of Mobile $50 Jan. 1, 1839. AL-UNL Rosene-UNL. PCGS Very Fine 35. This very rare issuer is unlisted in all references, and mysterious as such. This was printed at Western Bank Note Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. More than likely this was a fly-by-night operation set up to defraud. At the top center of this rather busy layout is an oval with cameo head and "50" counter. The base vignette shows a Native American male within an oval. The upper left shows partially draped Hebe giving a drink to an eagle producing lightning bolts. A trotting horse is at upper right. Cotton plants at left and right center flank the gothic title, and identical "50" counters are in the lower right corners. The red back shows Agriculture, with a scythe and plow, in an oval frame at center. Identical cameo heads are in ovals at the left and right ends. An intricate issue with a printed back. We have auctioned an unlisted $20 from this title with a blue back. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18263. - Huntsville, AL - Johnson House 5 Cents 1862 Rosene 140-4. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. There are several series and types of notes from the Johnson House. The most intriguing, though, were engraved and printed by Hutton & Freligh, prs., Memphis and bear their imprint. Distinctive to this rare and historic style was a rustic medallion portrait of Jefferson Davis centrally placed under the curved title. At left, workmen, one lounging, ride atop bales on a horse-drawn wagon. At right, field hands are shown picking cotton. This example is well printed and pleasing from the face. Noted are "Mounting Remnants on Back; Taper Repaired Ink Erosion." We sold an unlisted 10 Cents note from this series in our 2010 FUN Signature sale for $3,450 graded raw "Very Fine." This note is equally desirable due to its rarity and eye appeal. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1762.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18261.
