- Pennsylvania March 20, 1771 10 Shillings Francis Hopkinson Signature Fr. PA-147. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. The March 20, 1771 Pennsylvania series is an attractive one with red borders, arms and devices. The signature of Francis Hopkinson, signer of Declaration of Independence, appears on notes from this March 20, 1771 series. On this example, his nicely accomplished signature appears at the bottom. Hopkinson notes are much scarcer than John Hart notes from New Jersey and John Morton notes from Pennsylvania. Noted as having some "Minor Stains" by PCGS, but they appear in the top center, far from the signature. An excellent candidate for a Colonial note "Signers" set. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18180. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Pennsylvania March 10, 1769 5 Shillings Fr. PA-142. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. Thus is quite a striking looking note, and vastly underrated in this grade and boasting this eye appeal. The denomination was missing from the Boyd collection notes October 2006 Ford XV auction. The printing clarity on both sides by Hall and Sellers is superb, and the nature print back is particularly well detailed. The noted "Minor Mounting Remnants on Back" are petty detriments for what might be one of the finest known examples of the type. The estimate for this well pedigreed note is conservative compared to its rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18179. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Pennsylvania March 10, 1769 2 Shillings Fr. PA-140. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. An exemplary note, nearly unimprovable, and among the finest from the "Bettering House Series." It is uniface and has a larger format than the 3 pence note. The lengthy obligation shows Penn Arms at upper right. On the left and right sides, the ornamental border printing is done in the same style; the borders at top and bottom are very different from the sides and from one another. This is a plate A position note. In Newman Part VI, we sold a D position in PCGS Choice New 64 Apparent with mounting remnants for $2,530. This natural and bold note should greatly exceed that price. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3055.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18178. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Pennsylvania March 10, 1769 6 Pence Fr. PA-136. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. A small size format "Bettering House Money" pence note with minimal faults. Noted only with some "Small Edge Splits at Left" by PCGS. Rare and undervalued in this condition. Unpriced in both Newman and Friedberg. Most likely the finest known example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $564.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18177. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Pennsylvania March 10, 1769 3 Pence Fr. PA-134. PCGS Very Fine 30. The March 10, 1769 notes are known as "Bettering House Money." The 3 pence is the lowest denomination and is unpriced in both Newman and Friedberg; it is rare in any grade. A small format note, typeset within ornaments with the Penn Family arms at the lower right. An example did not appear in Boyd, and this is most likely the finest known. This beauty has a "PPQ" appearance. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18176. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Pennsylvania June 18, 1764 20 Shillings George Clymer Signature Fr. PA-126. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This infrequently encountered two-sided Franklin and Hall imprint type is signed by George Clymer, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The Newman VI auction in April 2015 was notable for having all Colonial note Declaration signers represented. Clymer (1739-1813) was both a businessman and a politician. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Council of Safety, as well as Continental Treasurer, and Continental Congressman (1776-77, 1780-82). He was heavily involved with fiscal matters. Not only did he sign the Declaration, but also the Constitution. Clymer is a much rarer signer than Hart, Hopkinson or Morton on Colonial notes. He is the third most difficult Declaration signatory to acquire (William Ellery from Rhode Island is the second rarest, and James Wilson is the rarest). PCGS notes a "Repaired Edge Split at Right; Small Edge Split at Left" by PCGS. The Clymer-signed 5 Shillings PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent realized $2,115 in Newman VI. Overall, this is a pleasing example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18175. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
