- Pennsylvania October 1, 1755 18 Pence Fr. PA-64. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. There are several series of Benjamin Franklin and David Hall printed notes from Pennsylvania. This early issue is very rare. Like this 18 pence, the lesser denominations are uniface and without imprint. This plate position A note is well margined and attractive from the face. Noted with "Splits and Repairs; Minor Stains." There are few survivors in any condition, and this is a choice example from the series date. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18166. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina December 29, 1785 40 Shillings Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-215. PCGS Very Fine 25. A fascinating Contemporary Counterfeit. Though well made for the period, unequivocally from a false plate. Blue counterfeit detector notes were made of the type (one was in the Boyd collection of this denomination,) and inspection of the left vignette shows the telltale sign of a counterfeit: the sword arm does not bend at the elbow. A problem-free and sharp looking example of another rare type from the Newman collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18165. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina December 29, 1785 20 Shillings Fr. NC-214. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. This 20 shillings from the last series of North Carolina notes is rare, and unpriced in the Newman reference. This is an interesting two-sided printed series with a vignette at the left face and the Thomas Davis imprint on the back. The 20 shillings vignette is an intricate version of the angel Gabriel blowing his trumpet while above a church. The face is bright and three margins are wide. Noted with "Missing LR Corner Tip; Foreign Substance and Stains on Back," which are not severe flaws. Based on researched auction appearances, this is a rarer denomination than the 40 shillings from the act. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3055.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18164. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina May 15, 1779 $5 Be Freedom... Fr. NC-183a. PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ. This is another North Carolina series with mottos, and it is especially difficult to locate in high grades due to the thinner paper used. The full motto, "Be Freedom and Independence Steadily pursued," is one of two used on $5 notes. This is an exceptional example, one of the finest we have seen. It has complete margins and is perfectly centered on the face. The back is deeply printed. We consider this an undervalued series in top condition. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18163. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina August 8, 1778 $100 Freedom or Honourable Death Fr. NC-182. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The highest denomination from this motto series and inside a rather compact cartouche. Only 2,500 notes were authorized, the lowest print run for the date. Appealing, although the margins are a bit close. Only some "Small Edge Repairs." are noted. A rare and difficult to find North Carolina type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $998.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18162. - North Carolina August 8, 1778 $40 Freedom of Speech... Fr. NC-180. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is an iconic, patriotic motto type from the series. The full motto "Freedom of Speech, and the Liberty of the Press" is in the lower left cartouche. Only 3,125 were authorized and, based upon observation, the type seems much rarer than others in this series. This example is essentially full, but noted are "Splits and Tears; Tape Repairs." The repairs consist of old hinges along the edges for reinforcement. An important and historic motto type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18161. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
