- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/2 Crow & Pitcher Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-156c. PCGS Very Fine 35. A rare counterfeit, and perhaps more difficult to obtain than the genuine. The plate has a different character than that of the original. Also, the crossbar of the "H" slopes as opposed to being straight across. It would be nicely paired with the sharp looking genuine note offered in the previous lot. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1645.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18155. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/4 Hare Fr. NC-155c. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This is a very sharply printed and handsome $1/4 Hare, and much nicer looking than the Boyd example in Ford XV. The margins are complete, though on the close size, but the Hare vignette details are outstanding. An interesting plate layout forced one signer to be near the top and the other at the bottom, as opposed to being together. This is noted only with a "Small Edge Split at Top Center," which is justifiably ignored when weighed with its charm and eye appeal. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1116.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18154. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/8 Heron Fr. NC-154b. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The eight different $1/8 denominations are extremely difficult to find in high grades. This Heron faces up quite well and its eye appeal complements the $1/16 Cornucopia previous to this. Sharp vignette details are seen on this quaint example of American folk art. Fully margined, it is ample at the top and right (perhaps the upper right sheet position). The Boyd note in the Ford XV sale of October 2006 (lot 8374), graded "About Very Fine" with some splits, realized $1,150. This note, offered nine years later, is superior. Noted with "Small Edge Splits; Mounting Remnants on Back" by PCGS. A very attractive representative Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18153. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/16 Cornucopia Fr. NC-153c. PCGS Very Fine 20. The April 2, 1776 "at Halifax" issue is among the most interesting of the Colonial notes. There are 56 distinct vignette types (seen at the lower left of each note), ranging from $1/16 to $20 denominations, and all of them merit consideration and further study. Certain types appear on different varieties of paper, depending upon what was available at the time of printing. Completion of all 56 types is an impressive task, but the Eric P. Newman collection is one of the few to have achieved this meritorious set. High grade notes on many vignette types are unknown to us; the fragile paper often used and tight margining subjected many to the small nicks and flaws we see today. The six different $1/16 notes are all among the most difficult of the denominations to find in choice grade. This lovely Cornucopia has splendid surfaces and boardwalk margins for the issue. The Boyd note had ample selvedge at left and bottom, therefore possibly from the lower left sheet position. The Newman note is much superior to the Boyd and Midnight Ride Collection examples. Conservatively estimated in this problem-free condition. Locating an upgrade anytime in the near future is most unlikely. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $2350.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18152. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- North Carolina November 27, 1729 5 Pounds Handwritten Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-34. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This is a higher denomination contemporary counterfeit from a fascinating and uniquely styled early series. This example was condemned in the period and "Counterfeit" is penned diagonally across the face. The affixed paper seal at bottom center is well done, and there is only a sole back endorsement. A bright note with sharply drawn "signatures." Noted with "Center Split Tape Repaired; Small Edge Tears, Damage in LL Corner." Overall, an attractive example from this early, handwritten series. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18151. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
