- Colony of New York-New York Water Works August 2, 1775 1 Shilling Unissued Proof Fr. NY-172. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. An exceedingly rare, if not unique, August 2, 1775 Water Works proof impression. There were 2,000 notes authorized, but none are known signed. Only the two shillings, four shillings, and eight shillings notes were issued. This fascinating two-sided proof displays the full red-color banner at the top of the face and has the ornate back design printed by Hugh Gaine. This note is illustrated as a color highlight plate on page 51 of the Newman 5th edition. Noted with "Minor Stains; Small Holes" and as an "Unissued Proof." This is the only example of which we are aware. An excellent opportunity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1586.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18143. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
