- Colony of New York May 31, 1709 10 Shillings (a) Fr. NY-2. PCGS Choice New 63. The second denomination from this very early series of New York "Tall" bills. This was printed on the sheets for the 5 shillings, two of each, running across. Style and layout are the same as on the 5 shillings. As previously, uniface and printed in black by William Bradford, without imprint, on horizontal four-subject sheets. Typeset with the top block with indented design. Three very bold, "Dutch" style vanity signatures are seen at the bottom, dominated by Johannes DePeyster in the center. There are also two plate positions with different typesetting arrangements. This is the "a" type with the unhyphenated "Shillings" on the second line and the "Governor" spelling near the end of the obligation. Only 500 notes of each 10 shilling plate arrangement were authorized. This is a choice note and the natural paper body has the look of PPQ; surfaces are nearly immaculate. A very bold example, and one of the finest we have seen or handled. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $10575.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18135. - Colony of New York May 31, 1709 5 Shillings (a) Fr. NY-1. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The 1709 Colony of New York "Tall" notes are rare and, because they normally come in choice condition, they are very appealing. These May 31, 1709 notes were authorized for military expenditures, specifically for Canadian expeditionary forces to build three forts and transport troops up the Hudson River. Uniface and printed in black by William Bradford, without imprint, on horizontal four-subject sheets. The notes are typeset and have a top indented design block. There are three very bold, vanity style signatures in the character of the period. The Johannes DePeyster signature in particular flows artistically under the obligation. There are two plate positions with different text styles. This is "a" with "Shil-lings" split on two lines, "C" in Colony not skewed upwards, "&" on fourth line, and the "Governor" spelling. A very bold example with deep, natural embossing; well margined, and quite full with a natural deckled edge at the right. This has a PPQ appearance, but the noted "Minor Ink Erosion in Serial Number," categorizes it as Apparent. That petty ink "flaw" is virtually undetectable. This is a handsome, early note and one of the finest we have handled. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $4935.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18134. - State of New Jersey 1786 30 Shillings Fr. NJ-216. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. We are aware of only two examples of this denomination. The Boyd/Ford note graded "Fine" sold for $2,070 in October 2006. Red text color is strong and the edges are fairly even all around. Some minor flaws are noted as "Edge Splits; Hinge Repairs." The repairs are from long ago. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1116.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18133. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- State of New Jersey 1786 15 Shillings Fr. NJ-215. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The 1786 New Jersey notes are very scarce, particularly in high grade. This is an attractive example overall for the technical grade. The red text is vibrant. Noted with "Small Hole and Hinge Repair near Top Center; Minor Stains." We are aware of only three auction records for just two different notes. Our May 2003 sale had a Choice Very Fine that sold for $3,220. It resold in May 2004 for $3,565. Ford XV in October 2006 had an "Extra Fine" that sold for $6,900. This example is just the third known to us. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18132. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- State of New Jersey 1786 3 Shillings Fr. NJ-212. PCGS Very Fine 20. Once again, a difficult series to locate, and choice notes such as the present example are rarely offered. The colorful face shows the red New Jersey Arms at the lower left. The note is well printed, and face-to-back registration is perfect. An ideal type note from this late series. We have always considered high-grade notes such as this underrated and undervalued. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18131. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- State of New Jersey December 20, 1783 2 Shillings 6 Pence Fr. NJ-202. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is a rarely encountered series from the State of New Jersey during the early Confederation period. The series' notes were withdrawn from circulation within a year. They have a complex obligation and were usable "in the Payment of Taxes." Prior to the current offering, notes from this date have been seen mainly in advanced New Jersey Colonial note collections, such as Spiro, DuPont, and Boyd. Boyd's incredible six different denominations were sold in the Ford XV sale by Stack's in October 2006. This note is more attractive than the Boyd note (Lot 8297) from the face, and is pinned to a backing as noted. The Boyd note realized $1,840 at the 2006 Ford sale. That same example, also graded Fine 15 Apparent by PCGS, recently realized $3,290 in our April 2015 CSNS Signature Sale (Lot 18225). Noted with "Splits; Pinned to Backing." Another opportunity to obtain at auction this rarity with an excellent pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18130.
