- State of New Jersey December 20, 1783 2 Shillings 6 Pence Fr. NJ-202. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is a rarely encountered series from the State of New Jersey during the early Confederation period. The series' notes were withdrawn from circulation within a year. They have a complex obligation and were usable "in the Payment of Taxes." Prior to the current offering, notes from this date have been seen mainly in advanced New Jersey Colonial note collections, such as Spiro, DuPont, and Boyd. Boyd's incredible six different denominations were sold in the Ford XV sale by Stack's in October 2006. This note is more attractive than the Boyd note (Lot 8297) from the face, and is pinned to a backing as noted. The Boyd note realized $1,840 at the 2006 Ford sale. That same example, also graded Fine 15 Apparent by PCGS, recently realized $3,290 in our April 2015 CSNS Signature Sale (Lot 18225). Noted with "Splits; Pinned to Backing." Another opportunity to obtain at auction this rarity with an excellent pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18130. - State of New Jersey June 9, 1780 $20 Fr. NJ-191. PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ. An attractive Guaranteed by the United States type note from New Jersey. The top signature is that of David Brearley, a signer of the Constitution. This example is fully signed and countersigned on the back as issued. The face has nice margins; the back is well centered and displays bold color. Only modest handling is seen, and the paper is superior. A perfect series representative for a Guaranteed type set or any collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $998.75. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18129. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- State of New Jersey June 9, 1780 $5 Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NJ-188. PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ. This is a very scarce Contemporary Counterfeit, more so than the genuine note. Its overall look is different from the genuine, and the paper has a similarity to the counterfeit $20 notes from Maryland and Massachusetts. A choice example with strong back color. The Boyd collection note was sold raw in Ford XV for $2,185 ("Very Fine to Extremely Fine"). Another important note for the serious specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18128. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- New Jersey March 25, 1776 18 Pence Fr. NJ-176. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. Though lesser grade notes are easily available, this is nearly Superb Gem and beautifully balanced on both sides. Even and ample face margins complement the deep red coat of arms vignette at the lower left. Face to back registration is almost perfect. A great type note from this 1776-dated series. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18126. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- New Jersey February 20, 1776 30 Shillings John Hart Signature Fr. NJ-173. PCGS About New 53PPQ. This is a very bold example of a popular John Hart signed note. The Signers of the Declaration of Independence Colonial notes have interested numismatists for generations. Although the most available "signer" note, this series is much scarcer than the March 25, 1776 notes that follow. A well-printed example, with excellent margins and superior paper. These are always in demand, and appealing examples like the present have been better than four-figure notes for quite some time. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1175.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18125. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
