- Massachusetts June 18, 1776 12 Shillings Fr. MA-207. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. The June 18, 1776 dollar denomination, or "Small Sword in Hand," notes were printed by Benjamin Edes on coarse paper. They have the vertical format of the Revere "Swords," but the Patriot emblem is smaller and appears on the face rather than the back. The notes were denominated in both dollars (here $2) and shillings. Benjamin Edes (1732-1803) was a member of the Sons of Liberty and publisher of the Boston Gazette, along with his partner, printer John Gill. His ability to evade capture while transporting the Gazette's printing press and type to Watertown, Massachusetts was important for keeping his patriotic newspaper operating. John Gill left the partnership when his political opinions began to diverge from those of Edes. He died in obscurity and poverty despite his influence in the Revolution. This genuine bill is pleasant, but is noted with "Small Edge Splits; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $969.38. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18094. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Massachusetts Bay August 18, 1775 40 Shillings Fr. MA-173. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. The highest denomination note from this initial series of Paul Revere "Sword in Hand" notes. Full at the left end, though the right end is a bit frayed. A bright note, but we note a rather pronounced ink blot in the upper left text that shows to the back. Noted with those "Stains; Small Rust Holes; Edge Fraying at Right." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1116.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18091. - Massachusetts Bay August 18, 1775 24 Shillings Fr. MA-171. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A wide paper "Sword," and unusual as such, as many notes from the series are trimmed inward on the sides. A solid example, and noted with "Small Edge Tears; Stains" by PCGS. The printing is above average and this note presents very well. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $881.25. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18090. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
