- Massachusetts Bay August 18, 1775 2 Shillings 6 Pence Fr. MA-160. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. After the copperplate notes, the next several series of Revere engraved and printed notes were the "Sword in Hand" types issued across four dates. The faces showed text in a large cartouche and a small vignette at the lower left, varying by denomination. The backs used the iconic patriot wielding a sword, presenting an impressive image on the money during the period. Most genuine "Swords" are low grade, but they all have historic charm and many have interesting plate subtleties. This full-size example is a bit mottled. Noted with "Center Split Tape Repaired," which is seen on the back. A rare low denomination type used heavily for change. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18088. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Massachusetts Bay July 8, 1775 14 Shillings Fr. MA-153. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. An extremely rare July 8, 1775 copperplate note. The plate with this denomination still exists. The verso shows the engraving of Harvard College by Paul Revere. Only 540 notes of this denomination were authorized. This boldly printed note is broad and evenly margined. Half of the left end indent design remains, with a few letters of "American" visible. Noted as "Pen Cancelled" and with "Splits and Repairs; Minor Stains." This is a perfect representative of the Revere copperplate style and the rarer series of the two dates. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $3055.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18087. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Massachusetts Bay May 25, 1775 18 Shillings Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. MA-147. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A rare contemporary counterfeit copperplate type. The plate, of course, lacks the sharpness of a product created by Paul Revere. But such notes, when worn enough, would have been deceptive to some during the period. Held together from the back and noted with "Splits, Damage, and Repairs; Minor Stains." An interesting note and period piece. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $940.00. - Massachusetts Bay May 25, 1775 12 Shillings Fr. MA-143. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. There was a twenty-five year break in issuing paper currency in Massachusetts. In this time period, the Colonials, having been away from Britain for quite some time, were naturally becoming more American and less British. Massachusetts currency had an independent, nationalist look to it when Revere cut the copper plates for this issue. This example is broad and shows a significant part of the "American Paper" indent design at the far left. The bottom is especially wide, making this note very attractive. Noted as "Pen Cancelled" and with "Small Edge Splits." This example is well printed and has excellent paper body. It is an excellent type note from the Revere copperplate types with superior eye appeal. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1997.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18085. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Province of Massachusetts Bay June 20, 1744 2 Pence Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. MA-120. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent. This "Tall" Bill type is known in both genuine and counterfeit form. An intricate design is used with a circular cartouche for the text and ornate details at the entablature, which is supported by vine covered columns. At the lower left is the Royal Arms and at the lower right, the Massachusetts Arms. The printed back shows the denomination within an interesting "bracelet" design cartouche. The plate details are a bit weak and the note is clearly a contemporary counterfeit. Noted as: "Center Split Repaired; Small Edge Tears; Paper Toned; Pinholes." The note has considerable eye appeal from the face. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1410.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18084. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
