- Maryland April 10, 1774 $1/9 Fr. MD-60. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. This is an impressive condition rarity, and important as the lowest denomination from the series. It is possibly the finest known. Like the 1767 and 1770 series, strictly Uncirculated notes are virtually impossible to obtain. This lowest denomination fractional is the first of a vertical pairing from the Newman Collection, both with serial number 11519. Secret marks were used on the face plates; in this case, a colon after "Annapolis" served as a deliberate error to prevent note raising or counterfeiting. This is well margined on all sides, with broad sheet selvage at the right, and nearly a full left indent design. The face-to-back registration is perfect for the type. This is a lovely note and worth a significant premium above the higher dollar-denominated notes from the issue. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1086.88. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18068. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Maryland March 1, 1770 $2 Fr. MD-56. PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ. A superior grade note of the type. This denomination with two "quasi" Spanish Dollar vignettes on the face served to illustrate the denomination quickly and prevent note raising. This is a well framed and very nicely printed example of a beautiful design. In our opinion, a note that is undervalued in this condition. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $470.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18067. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Maryland March 1, 1770 $1/2 Fr. MD-53. PCGS About New 53PPQ. This is another series of Maryland notes where high-grade examples are nearly impossible to locate. The back imprint is interesting, with the initials of "A.C. and W. Green." Anne Catherine was the widow of Jonas Green, and this is one of the few female imprints known on American paper currency. The fractional denominations from the series are particularly rare in this state of preservation due to receiving tremendous use in commerce. Crisp and attractive, this example has only some handling and a solitary vertical fold. The note is sharply printed, well margined and shows a nearly full left end indent design. A choice fractional type note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $822.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18066. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

- Maryland January 1, 1767 $2 Fr. MD-45. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. An impressive note in Gem New 65PPQ condition from a Maryland series where the normally encountered grade is Very Good, split, pinned and/or backed. Long ago, this note was part of very small group of now well-dispersed examples with serial numbers in the vicinity of the No. 11351 observed here. The face type is interesting; the two diminutive "quasi" Spanish Colonial coin vignette denomination protectors readily identify this as a $2 note. This example is beautifully printed, with the back showing a horizontal nature print and the imprint of Jonas Green. The face has most of the left indent design intact, a wavy and natural cut, and extra wide margins at the top and right. The Boyd-Ford note sold in the Part XV Sale, serial number 11370, likely came from the Wayte Raymond holdings, many of which were merged into the combined Ford Colonial note collection. This is nearly perfect in face-to-back registration and the surfaces are immaculate. However, high end notes such as this have been undervalued in the past, especially in relation to some Gem Continental Currency notes, several of which have recently crossed the $10,000 level in Gem New 66PPQ or finer. The Gem New 66PPQ $2/9 from this series that achieved $8,812.50 in the Newman VI sale in April, and the $1 Gem New 65PPQ that reached $14,100 have changed that discrepancy. Very few 1767 Maryland notes reach, let alone exceed, the level of this Gem. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $5875.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18065. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
