St. Louis, MO - Lot of 2 Printed Advertisements with African-American Caricature Images on Backs of Missouri Defence Bond Remainders. An unusual pair of printed back ad notes, both on the blank backs of Missouri Defence Bond remainders, which after the war were available as scrap paper. Each has minstrel-like images of African-Americans as characterized in this period. The first, on the back of a $4 note, is printed in blue by M. Mayer (scrap iron, old metals, ...bones) with text across and upper corner vignettes of ragged minstrels performing. The second, on the back of a $3 note, is printed in brown to advertise the Popular Bell Line Route. A transit map is at top center, and a black male teacher with an exaggeratedly large mouth "speaks" the written words on the blackboard, ALWAYS TRAVEL BY THE BEE LINE. The caricatured black students sit in various stages of inattention while the dog on the bench appears to follow the lesson. Route locations and texts are at each end. Very much in the style of the period, printed shortly after the Civil War in the 1870s. Both are Fine or better. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society

City of Jefferson, MO - State of Missouri (Missouri Defence Bond) Act of November 5, 1861 $100 10% Coupon Bond due January 1, 1867 Jan'y 1, 1862 Cr. 61B. Very Good. This $100 five-year bond was due January 1, 1867, and used ten coupons. Similar to the previous, but printed on blue paper by John Douglas, who was an engraver and lithographer located at "10 Camp St. N.O." (seen at the base of the vignette). The Missouri Arms are at right, titles to the left, and obligation underneath. A large red "$100" protector is across and an embossed seal is at the left. Written date. No. 784. Signed by W. Shields and countersigned by C. F. Jackson. Complete, with ten $5 coupons underneath. There are some faults on this scarce bond: The upper left corner was roughly hewn away; numerous folds are seen from the face; the top center has internal tears repaired from the back with a paper strip; and there are some other glassine hinge repairs on back. The color is sharp and the seal well embossed. More than acceptable considering its scarcity and historical interest. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society

City of Jefferson, MO - State of Missouri (Missouri Defence Bond) Act of November 5, 1861 $100 10% Coupon Bond due January 1, 1865 Jan'y 1, 1862 Cr. 61A. Fine to Very Fine. A second Cr.61A $100 three-year bond, but with a different signature combination, in well above average grade. These are difficult to find. Like the previous, printed on cream paper, without printer name (style of A. Malus) by John Douglas, who was an engraver and lithographer located at "10 Camp St. N.O." (seen at the base of the vignette). The style is as on the last with Missouri Arms at right, titles to the left, and obligation below. It has a bright red "$100" protector and an embossed seal. Written date. No. 12. Signed by Tho. Murray as commissioner and countersigned by C. F. Jackson. Complete, with five $5 coupons underneath. Untrimmed, and wide at the bottom under the coupons. The seal is not as strongly embossed as previous, and there is a small puncture in the top margin over the frame. It has some petty back paper remnants. This would frame beautifully for display as it is vibrant from the face. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society
