(Jefferson City), MO - State of Missouri-Missouri Defence Bond $1 186_ Cr. 18. Remainder. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. The second series of Missouri Secessionist period notes were called "Defence Bonds." Despite not paying specified interest, they were payable "Three Years After Date." These notes were authorized by the Act of November 5, 1861, as noted in fine print around the top of the Missouri State Arms. These were printed uniface from engraved plates by Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S. C. on watermarked and plain paper. None appear to have been issued and are observed as remainders only. The $1 Cr. 18 is printed on vertically watermarked "W.T. & Co." paper, which is partially present in the note. A pastoral scene of cows along the river is at bottom center. The lower left shows the Missouri State Arms, common to all denominations, and at the lower right, Ceres is in an oval frame. A red curved ONE protector is under the titles. Plate A.
