City of Jefferson, MO - State of Missouri (Missouri Defence Bond) Act of November 5, 1861 $100 10% Coupon Bond due January 1, 1867 Jan'y 1, 1862 Cr. 61B. Very Good. This $100 five-year bond was due January 1, 1867, and used ten coupons. Similar to the previous, but printed on blue paper by John Douglas, who was an engraver and lithographer located at "10 Camp St. N.O." (seen at the base of the vignette). The Missouri Arms are at right, titles to the left, and obligation underneath. A large red "$100" protector is across and an embossed seal is at the left. Written date. No. 784. Signed by W. Shields and countersigned by C. F. Jackson. Complete, with ten $5 coupons underneath. There are some faults on this scarce bond: The upper left corner was roughly hewn away; numerous folds are seen from the face; the top center has internal tears repaired from the back with a paper strip; and there are some other glassine hinge repairs on back. The color is sharp and the seal well embossed. More than acceptable considering its scarcity and historical interest. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society

Buffalo, NY - Roots and Tyrer - John Roots' Bitters, J. W. Beardsley, General Agent, St. Louis for Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana "292" Sept. 1, 1865. PCGS About New 50. An incredibly stylish, two-sided advertising note from this Buffalo, New York based medicinal (at least purporting to be) firm that issued other types of known ad notes (there are two different listed in the Vlack reference). However, this fascinating piece is the first we have seen and ties directly to its St. Louis general agent J. W. Beardsley who, according the note, had the distribution rights in three states: Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Within the central obligation is "...Will deliver the Bearer on receipt /of the value in National Currency...," which is very unusual on an ad note. Also, this has a rarely seen fully-engraved date (unlike scrip notes, ad notes usually did not have dates). Lithographed on bond paper, with the imprint, The. Sage, Sons & Co. Lith. Pr'g. & Mfg. Co. Buffalo, N.Y., and printed on both sides. The face has titles and ad texts across the center. At the left, John Roots' broadside is unfurled by a woman apparently defying gravity while a couple at left stands by in amazement. The tie location text is underneath. At the right, a woman holds a dove (copied from the original Danforth, Wright & Co vignette; for example, Newman Collection notes such as Lee Bank, MA $1, Great Salt Lake City Corporation, UT $2, and Sauk County Bank, WI $3 and others). Above is "292," the street number of the company's address on Seneca St. in Buffalo. The back is perpendicular to the face and printed in green. It is broadside style (as shown on the face vignette) with Roots' portrait above lengthy text, all within a green frame. It basically purports to help every ailment, and says it is "purely Vegetable," from "Roots, Barks, and Berries..." Although hard to believe these days, it must have been a good seller as this would have been an expensive advertising note to print. A real rarity boasting broad appeal. Ex: Eric P. St. Louis, MO - North Missouri Railroad Ticket Office, 40 N. 4th St "40" Undated (1870s) Vlack 1775 Advertising Note. PCGS Extremely Fine 45. This complex series of advertising flyers printed by the North Missouri Rail Road resembled currency. They were studied by Robert A. Vlack extensively, and he published their variations in his Illustrated Catalogue of Early North American Advertising Notes (2001, Smythe & Co.). He lists a dozen varieties, but there are likely more to be discovered with close observation. Printed in English by Sage, Sons & Co., Buffalo, with three engraved signatures. The central vignette shows a lively railroad depot and ticket office, and a Native American Princess shields her eyes at left. A barefoot newspaper boy holds up the paper which reads, in part, "all about fine / FARMING LANDS / on line of / NORTH MISSOURI / RAIL ROAD." The back shows a railway map and information pertaining to routing and ticketing. This is a very choice example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society
