- Eric P. Newman's Original Manuscript For the 1976 Early Paper Money of AmericaRacine, 1976. Second (Bicentennial) edition. Eric P. Newman's extraordinary original manuscript, composed of: heavily annotated leaves from the first edition; new sheets of frequently recycled paper covered with handwritten additions and commentary; handwritten schematics of new designs; clipped illustrations and tables from the first edition pasted up into new layouts; onionskin tracing paper attached to first edition pages specifying changes; and extensive notes regarding every aspect of the text, its illustrations, or the book design itself. These materials offer a unique opportunity to glean the working process of Eric P. Newman, as he worked for years revising his greatest work. The papers make it clear that every aspect of the final revised book had been thought about carefully before decisions were made. Thousands upon thousands of handwritten words are penned on top of or alongside previously printed words. Notes were written by the author to the author, and frequently responded to by the author. A handful of notes and suggestions appear to be from others involved in the book's layout, always responded to by the author (one example: a penciled comment, "suggest reducing cuts somewhat and indicating that in smaller type; 'slightly reduced,' or 'three quarters size' or whatever" has written on top of it in red ink a large "No.") The care that Newman took with developing the new edition of his book is remarkable, and is impressive even to those familiar with his high standards and indefatigable appetite for work. The stack of papers is almost 8 cm high, and each sheet obviously represents hours upon hours of work and rework. Unique and of the greatest importance. Estimate $5,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15361 (realized $1320). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11143

- Heavily Annotated Correction Copy of the First Edition of Eric P. Newman's MasterworkRacine, 1967. First edition. 4to, custom brown pebbled leatherette. 360 pages, interleaved; illustrated. Eric P. Newman's extensively annotated correction and revision copy of the first edition of The Early Paper Money of America. An extraordinary volume. One struggles to find a paragraph left unrevised. The original pages themselves are amended in several inks. Longer additions are usually reserved for the interleaves, though on occasion entire sheets of new information are glued or laid in. Some of the additions are carefully and neatly entered; many are hastily written, then revised right away. In one case, a tipped-in addition takes the form of a folding sheet a foot and a half long. Beyond simple edits, the authorial annotations rearrange content, lay out plans for new illustrations, and develop different approaches to some of the more complex subjects covered. Some pages feature as many as four different inks or pencils, indicating that this was a volume returned to time and again as the author tried intensely to improve what had been an outstanding work in its first edition. A very important copy that led to the development of the full working manuscript also in this sale. The volume looks the worse for wear, given the very heavy use it received, with the boards stained and bowed and with occasional minor stains and discoloration, but this hardly detracts from what is one of the highlights of this library. Estimate $2,500. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15360 (realized $720). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11132

- Eric P. Newman's Correction Copy of The Fantastic 1804 DollarFirst edition, second printing. Racine, 1962. 8vo, original brown cloth lettered in silver. 144 pages; illustrated. Eric P. Newman's extensively annotated and extra-illustrated copy, prepared for corrections of any future editions. Includes over 25 instances of published printed content inserted in the gutter or pasted onto leaves, including published comments made by Newman himself over the years. A number of pages have handwritten annotations, in more than one ink, and a detailed note is laid in discussing the erroneous photograph used on page 137 (alleged to be the Idler specimen). A few other sheets are laid in. An envelope has been affixed to the rear cover, in which several full articles and a number of letters or printed emails have been stored. The book's binding is necessarily broken by the presence of so much extra material, all of which results in a copy of the book about twice as thick as the original. A fantastic copy. Also included in this lot is Newman's revision copy of "The Dollar $ign: Its Written and Printed Origins," in the form of an annotated photocopy of the published article. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15358 (realized $1560). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11551

- Eric P. Newman's Revision Copies Of Important Works on Colonial Numismatics Includes the following: Coinage for Colonial Virginia (New York: ANS, 1956); "The Continental Dollar of 1776 Meets Its Maker" (The Numismatist, August 1959); The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling (New York: ANS, 1959); "A Recently Discovered Coin Solves a Vermont Numismatic Enigma" (Centennial Publication of the American Numismatic Society, New York: ANS, 1958); "Nature Printing on Colonial and Continental Currency" (The Numismatist, February 1964); and Studies on Money in Early America (New York: ANS, 1976). Materials generally very good. Eric P. Newman's revision copies of several important works. The extent of revision and correction varies widely: the 1959 Numismatist article on the 1776 Continental Currency dollar includes a few minor edits, as does his offprint of the "Vermont Numismatic Enigma" article; his offprint of the 1964 Numismatist article on nature printing on early paper money is much more substantively revised and rewritten, while the Coinage for Colonial Virginia volume is simply updated as new information came to light. The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling is somewhat extensively revised, with some notes laid in. The copy of the 1976 Studies on Money in Early America volume, including two important articles by Newman, contains the most revisions. This volume resembles the 1804 dollar book below in that a number of inserts are laid in or actually glued into the gutter or directly onto pages. The article on Bungtown Halfpence in particular has much new material added and a fair amount of rewriting; the piece on the gold 1792 Washington piece has only one substantive note added. A very interesting and significant lot. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15357 (realized $1560). - The Scarce First Printing of The Fantastic 1804 DollarFirst printing. Racine: Whitman, 1962. 8vo, original brown textured cloth lettered in silver. 144 pages; illustrated. Inscribed, signed, and dated by both authors on the front flyleaf. Page edges spotted from storage, else fine. A third signed copy of the first printed proofs. One of the key diagnostics between this printing and final published version is the name of Chapter IX. Here, it is "The Diplomatic Gift Delusion." In the final version it is "The Diplomatic Gift Background." It is indicative of Eric P. Newman's character that he enjoyed telling this story and never tried to hide how close they came to publishing a serious error. Estimate $500. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15356 (realized $192). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11323
