- Hand-Tinted Lithograph of Red Jacket Wearing Oval Washington 1792 Indian Peace MedalHand-tinted lithographic print, framed. Philadelphia: Published by E.C. Biddle. Lithographed by Lehman & Duval, 1834. An outstanding portrait bust of the notable Seneca Red Jacket or Sagoyewatha (c. 1750-1830), chief of the Wolf clan who signed the Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794 establishing peace between the Six Nations and the United States. In this portrait, Red Jacket wears a large Washington oval Indian Peace Medal clearly dated 1792. Washington himself had presented him with the medal that year, which today is in the collection of the Buffalo History Museum. The artist, Charles Bird King (1785-1862) was a portrait painter who was commissioned by the U.S. government to paint the portraits of Native American delegates visiting the nation's capital; he is known to have painted over 100 such portraits, making his work an important contribution to the historical record for these leaders. He was the primary artistic contributor to Thomas McKenney and James Hall's 1836-1844 History of the Indian Tribes of North America, from which this lithograph comes. The frame measures 58 by 50 cm and the lithograph is matted to 41 by 30 cm. This item was displayed in the Newman Money Museum at Washington University. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15324 (realized $720). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11512

- BEP Portrait, Vignette & Design Specimen ScrapbookSpine title cited. Scrapbook of finely engraved portraits, vignettes, and bank note design elements, assembled for the use of Bureau of Engraving and Printing Chief Henry C. Jewell, possibly by BEP Chief Engraver George W. Casilear, c. 1876-1877. Oblong 4to, original brown half morocco, gilt; spine with four raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, with H.C. JEWELL impressed in gilt at the base of the spine. Approximately 60 leaves, interleaved with ruled paper. Of these, 25 leaves have various finely engraved portraits, vignettes, bank note elements, and related designs affixed to them. There is a total of 11 portraits, 8 vignettes, and 143 design elements. No text accompanies the engravings. An intriguing scrapbook with some exceptionally well-rendered engraved design elements, many of them made for bank notes and bonds. Beyond the spine lettering, there is no text to assist us in determining the context in which this book was assembled. A very interesting letter from Raphael Ellenbogen to Eric P. Newman, dated October 28, 1996, attempts to shed some light on the matter, and speculates that the book was compiled by George W. Casilear between 1865 and 1870, but this is not entirely accurate. At least two of the engravings make reference to committees planning for the U.S. Centennial in 1876, and one is dated 1872, giving us the earliest date at which it was likely to have been made. Given that Jewett served as Chief of the BEP only in 1876 and 1877, it seems safe to assign the production of this volume to those years. It was clearly not intended for special presentation, as the binding is fairly ordinary and the spine lettering points to a purely practical function. While the binding is rubbed and worn at the extremities, the engravings are clean and crisp. A lovely book. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15323 (realized $720). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11084

- Rarely Available Interpol Reports on CounterfeitingSix 28 cm binders, seven 32 cm binders, and approximately 50 large envelopes, comprising all together well over 10,000 pages of heavily illustrated international reports on both genuine and counterfeit bank notes, as well as travelers' checks, coins, and other financial instruments. Reports range at least from the early 1960s to 1990s. Many of the later reports are illustrated in color. These exhaustive reports are continually updated by Interpol, and circulate mostly within the worlds of law enforcement, international banking, bank note printing, and treasury officials of governments around the world. Most of the reports here present are concerned with information on genuine notes, though many of the more modern reports in envelopes focus on counterfeit U.S. notes. They contain an extraordinary amount of information, but are rarely encountered in the numismatic world. Condition varies, but generally the reports are fine or nearly so, while the binders may be a bit worn. A rare opportunity. Estimate $750. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15322 (realized $240). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11288

- Early Illustrated Account of the San Francisco MintVol. I, No. IV (San Francisco: October 1856). 8vo, original printed paper covers. (145)-192 pages; 2 leaves of advertisements; woodcut text illustrations, including 10 illustrations depicting scenes at the San Francisco Mint in its early days. The article, "Coining Money at the San Francisco Branch Mint," appears on the first nine pages, accompanied by illustrations of the building and many minting operations. A bit worn and with some spotting; coming unstitched but not previously bound. Very good. Very rare. It may be the earliest illustrated account of this western mint. It covers virtually the entire minting process, from when a visitor has been cleared to enter and "has just placed a bag of gold at the Treasurer's counter, for the purpose of having it coined," to processing the bullion and fabricating it into planchets, thence to be "carried to the Coining Room, to be 'stamped.'" Estimate $750. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15320 (realized $660). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11411

- An Extensive Run of Hunt's Merchants' Magazine and Commercial ReviewTitle varies somewhat. New York, 1839-1870 (not complete). An impressive group of 55 complete volumes of this very scarce publication, which served as an important conduit of commercial knowledge in the middle of the 19th century, and which by necessity often treated of matters relating to coinage and currency, counterfeiting and banking, in its pages. Volumes present include: 1-30, 33-41, 43, 46-50, 52, 54, and 56-63. 8vo, all in 19th-century bindings much the worse for wear, most with detached boards (a few of which may be missing). Ex-library copies. Pages generally very good, but bindings dry and worn. Still, an extensive run of a difficult to find periodical. Good. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15319 (realized $312). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11204
