- Puglia, James Ph. Forgery Defeated; Or a New Plan for Invalidating and Detecting All Attempts of the Kind; For Which a Patent Has Been Obtained from the United States. Philadelphia: J.F. Hurtel, 1822. 8vo, contemporary plain blue paper covers. 30, (2) pages. Signed on front cover, "Hon. John Adams, Esq." Near fine. Extremely rare. A very early and frankly bizarre anti-counterfeiting proposal which averred that "it is easier to forge a copper plate than a plain writing" and suggested that replacing all engraved bank notes with handwritten ones, signed by those who issued it and all who subsequently passed it, would lead to fewer problems. Ex: George F. Kolbe (6/1990); Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Estimate $200. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15949 (realized $1200).
