- Howard R. Newcomb's Plated Copy of the 1912 George H. Earle SalePhiladelphia: Davis & Harvey, June 25-29, 1912. 4to, contemporary dark maroon pebbled morocco paneled in blind; upper board lettered in gilt; spine with four raised bands lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; all page edges marbled. v, (3), 225, (1) pages; (12) page prices realized list bound in; 3875 lots; 39 very fine photographic plates. Hand-priced in pencil. Two invoices made out to "Howard" by Davis & Harvey laid in; a typewritten letter from Elmer S. Sears to Howard R. Newcomb, listing coins purchased for Newcomb at the sale, also laid in. There are several plated Chapman catalogues from the Howard R. Newcomb library in the Eric P. Newman library, all in this binding style. Adams 19, rated A+ overall. The Earle sale realized $55,821.63, a record at the time. While not as extensive as the Jenks collection, coin for coin it is probably superior. The ancient, European and American sections are particularly remarkable, for rarity and condition alike. The spine on this copy is in poor repair, with most of the spine covering chipped off (some is laid in); contents very good or better. Estimate $2,000. Ex: Howard R. Newcomb. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15179 (realized $1320). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11070
