- Rare and Informative Reports On the Suppression of CounterfeitingTwelve of the 13 annual reports issued from 1854 to 1866, being the first through 13th, lacking only the eighth for completion. Boston, 1854-1866. 8vo, original printed paper covers [final with plain covers]. Occasional wear to covers. Very good to fine copies. A nearly complete set of this rare but important publication. The Association funded the prosecution of counterfeiters, and did much to encourage rigorous law enforcements efforts against counterfeiting. Most of these reports include highly detailed accounts of successful convictions, giving not only the names of those convicted, but a description of what they passed and where, as well as the resulting sentences. Single issues are desirable; complete sets are virtually unknown. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Goodspeed's Book Shop (10/1969); Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15153 (realized $504). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11301

- Complete Set of the Classic Original American Journal of NumismaticsVols. I-LIII, complete. New York and Boston, 1866-1924. 4to, mostly as issued in original printed paper covers. First four volumes monthly; most volumes quarterly; later volumes annually; Vol. LIII as issued in three parts [Vol. LIII, No. 1, the Miller & Ryder works, included here in the separate offprint form with the Additions & Corrections laid in]. VII-VIII and XVII-XIX bound in two volumes. A complete set of this extraordinarily important U.S. journal. Even today, the AJN remains an indispensable and unparalleled source of numismatic information and history. Many of America's greatest contributions to numismatic scholarship first appeared in the pages of this most important publication. Crosby's classic works on large cents, parts of his Early Coins of America, Frey's Dictionary of Numismatic Names, Edgar Adams's extensive work on California pioneer gold coins and, later on, the scholarly, still indispensable studies on ancient Greek coins by Newell, Baldwin Brett, and others are but a small sampling. For American researchers, the Journal is interesting for the reminiscences and other fascinating tidbits of information to be found in the earlier volumes, much of which is little known today except among the select few fortunate to possess a set of this remarkable storehouse of knowledge. Clain-Stefanelli 350. Grierson 16. Sigler 74. Condition varies considerably, with a few volumes being rather worn and separating or with occasional missing paper covers. Most volumes very good to fine. Estimate $5,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15150 (realized $2640). - Eric P. Newman's Heath Literary AwardsThe Heath Literary award is the most important literary award conferred by the American Numismatic Association. Established in 1949, it recognizes outstanding articles published during the previous 12 months in the ANA's magazine The Numismatist. Newman won the award a record 16 times. Present here are the following medals: (in silver) 1959, 1964, and 1966 First Place awards, and 1965 and 1979 Second Place awards; (in bronze) 1956 Third Place award, two 1957-dated awards (one in the older style and one in the newer style), 1967 Fourth Place award, 1975 Second Place award, an undated award that must be from 1980, and a 1984 award in the wooden box in which it was presented. The Heath Literary Award has not always been consistent either in the number of awards bestowed or the metals in which particular medals were struck. Some awards were dated in the year of presentation, which others bear the year of the article being recognized; to further confuse matters, a few are undated. A total of 12 Heath Literary Awards are here present, including three of Newman's four First Place awards. This lot is a unique testament to the importance of Newman's contributions over the years in the pages of The Numismatist, as well as being a tribute to the esteem in which he was held. Estimate $1,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15149 (realized $1440). - The First Six Volumes of The Numismatist Our Rarest Foundational PublicationTitle varies. Volumes 1-6 (Monroe, Michigan: Dr. Geo. F. Heath, September 1888-December 1893), complete, bound in one volume. 8vo, somewhat later red half morocco; spine ruled and lettered in gilt. 26 + 48 + 112 + (2), 30, iv, (31)-86, (89)-106 + (3)-18-34, (37)-52, (57)-112 + 136, (4), 137-176 pages; unpaginated section in Vol. VI consisting of the Program to the 1893 ANA Convention; halftone portraits of Lyman Haynes Low, Samuel Hudson Chapman, Ed. Frossard, Joseph Hooper, Jos. Leroux, David Harlowe, Charles Taylor Tatman, Herbert E. Morey, and W. Kelsey Hall bound with appropriate issues, inconsistently counted as part of the pagination; lithographic plate of "The Proposed World's Fair Souvenir Half Dollar"; double-page lithographic table by Brudin of Chinese numerals; text illustrations; woodcut portrait of Dr. Geo. F. Heath in the text. Lacks portrait of P. Napoleon Breton; no printed paper covers included. Most issues trimmed to 19.5 by 13.5 cm from an original size of 20.5 by 14.5 cm. Volume II more closely trimmed, to approximately 17 by 13 cm. Trimming does not interfere with text. Bound with an untrimmed copy of Vol. VII (1894), complete in 12 numbers and 288 pages plus 4 plates. One of the true landmarks in American numismatic literature. The whereabouts of about a dozen sets of the first six volumes of The Numismatist are currently known. Originally, George Heath titled his little publication The American Numismatist, but after the first issue the name was shortened to The Numismatist, perhaps to avoid conflict with C.E. Leal's The American Numismatist, which had appeared two years before. Print runs of the first two volumes were small; as early as 1893, Heath no longer could supply certain issues. David Sklow has traced as many as two dozen sets through various public offerings, but the whereabouts of only 11 can be ascertained. A number of the "unlocated" listings likely record the appearance of sets duplicated in the known census; and, sadly, a few sets have probably perished. Sklow aptly closes his article: "There is one great, overwhelming fact concerning the magazine: the first six volumes are the most highly sought pieces of American numismatic literature. A library lacking these informative volumes just seems to fall short of greatness." This has been recognized for some time. In an article appearing in the May, 1941 issue of The Numismatist, Editor Frank G. Duffield wrote: {blockquote}"It is with considerable interest that we see that a set of the first six volumes of The Numismatist (or American Numismatist, as Volume 1, No. 1, was styled) catalogued in Mr. Fisher's sale of May 3rd. While it is generally conceded that the information to be obtained from these early numbers is not significant, the collectors' love of completeness and desire to have rare items, make the sale of this series of our predecessor in the [fiftieth] anniversary year of the Association an item of note. It is seldom realized how few complete sets of The Numismatist are available." {/blockquote} The portrait of P. Napoleon Breton was also lacking from the Stack Family set and at least one other Volume VI seen, suggesting that it was not distributed with every copy. Several issues in Vols. 5 and 6 signed by collector Fred W. Porter. Binding is very worn, with both boards detached and the spine covering mostly lacking. Vol. VII chipped, but first six volumes are rather well-preserved and have no problems beyond the moderate trimming. Very good. Estimate $15,000. Ex: William F. Dunham; donated to the Art Institute of Chicago, Dec. 11, 1922 and subsequently withdrawn (with stamp indicating such on their bookplate); Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15147 (realized $24000). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11141
