- Eric P. Newman Research Files: The Fugio Copper CoinageTwo boxes of correspondence, photographs, original and photocopied publications, clippings, manuscripts, drafts, and other assorted items regarding the Fugio copper coinage of 1787 and related pieces. Thousands of pages present. Materials are generally well-preserved. Eric P. Newman's first article on early American coinage was "Varieties of the Fugio Cent," which appeared in the January-February 1949 issue of Wayte Raymond's Coin Collector's Journal. It was reissued in 1952 to accompany his work on the 1776 Continental Currency coinage, and remained a favorite subject of Newman's throughout his life. Nearly 60 years later, in 2008, he revisited the subject with a book-length work, United States Fugio Copper Coinage of 1787. The research files present in this lot include: drafts for Newman's original 1949 article on Fugio coppers; correspondence related to Fugio copper dies in the ANS collection; original negative and positive photographic plates for the 1949 publication; several hundred pages of Newman's research notes on Fugio coppers, mostly handwritten; several hundred pieces of correspondence on Fugio coppers; photostat copies of the Journals of the Continental Congress received from the General Services Administration; material on Fugios taken from various volumes of the Colonial Newsletter; photographs of Fugios received from Ken Bressett; Newman's "clip file" of published material related to the Fugio coppers, including pages torn from journals or auction catalogues, articles, photocopies from books, etc.; photocopy file of "Jarvis-Bolton Correspondence 1788-1789"; various plaster, wax, and aluminum foil impressions of coins, along with many additional photographs; the first draft of the 2008 volume, as well as two additional drafts; bookplates, some signed, intended for use in the 2008 volume; and Newman's corrections copy of the published 2008 volume. An important research archive. Estimate $5,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15141 (realized $10200). - Eric P. Newman Research Files: Articles on Early American Paper MoneyOne box of correspondence, photocopies, photographs, notes, clippings, personal memoranda, and various manuscript and draft materials for several articles by Eric P. Newman on early American paper money, as well as additional material on various other aspects of the early paper money of America. Over 1000 pages present. Materials generally well-preserved. Substantial material is here present relating to the important article, "Newly Discovered Franklin Invention: Nature Printing on Colonial and Continental Currency," published over four issues of The Numismatist in 1964. Newman's attempts to identify nature prints on Colonial currency by plant type led him to correspond with a variety of specialists outside numismatics, including Edwin Wolf, of the Library Company of Philadelphia, George H.M. Lawrence, of the Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt Botanical Library, and Kneeland McNulty, of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Drafts of Newman's article are present, including a large-paper draft, with halftone plates. The illustrations were especially important for this article, and Newman discusses the subject at length with Numismatist editor Elston Bradfield in the correspondence present here. Other correspondence present is between Newman and the Smithsonian, the American Antiquarian Society, the Papers of Benjamin Franklin project, Sarah Freeman from Johns Hopkins University, and many others. Other articles by Eric P. Newman for which archival materials are here present include: "Sources of Emblems and Mottoes: Continental Currency and the Fugio Cent" (The Numismatist, December 1966); "Study Reveals Data on 1787 Fugio Cent" (Coin World, December 28, 1966); "Franklin Making Money More Plentiful" (Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, 1971); "Benjamin Franklin's Numismatic Accomplishments" (Proceedings of the 8th International Congress of Numismatics, 1973); "Numismatic Humor on Civil War Patriotic Envelopes" (The Numismatist, August 1973); "A Mysterious Paper Money Interlock between Canada and United States" (Canadian Paper Money Journal, July 1984); "New York City Small Change Bills of 1814-1816" (Proceedings of the Coinage of the Americas Conference, 1985); "The Earliest Money Using the Dollar as an Official Unit of Value" (The Numismatist, November 1985); "Earliest Known Error on U.S. Paper Money" (Paper Money, September-October 1987, with Ron Horstman); and "An American Numismatic Pamphlet Featuring the Execution of a Counterfeiter" (The Asylum, Fall 2001). Materials include correspondence, notes, drafts, meeting programs, clipped material from published sources, photographs, and personal memoranda. Also present is correspondence with the North Carolina Museum of History (including photographs of North Carolina Colonial paper money from their collection, in addition to photocopies of museum catalogue records), the City of Charleston, South Carolina, and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History relating to a one penny note issued by the City of Charleston on October 9, 1773, and Ned Downing relating to New Hampshire colonial paper money. Another significant offering. Estimate $3,000. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15139 (realized $1680). - Eric P. Newman Correspondence Files: U.S. Federal CoinageOne box of material, primarily consisting of original letters to Eric P. Newman from various collectors and dealers, with carbon copies of Newman's letters in return, as well as various associated items. Thirty-six correspondents are included. Most materials are well-preserved. Given that Eric P. Newman was best known for his work in the field of early American coins and paper money, it comes as no surprise that his correspondence on U.S. federal issues is more limited in scope. But given that Newman also was coauthor of the definitive work on the 1804 dollar and was among the premier experts on authentication, his correspondence reflects this. The topics of the correspondence vary considerably depending on the correspondent. Technical discussions of matters pertaining to coining operations in the early U.S. Mint are common, as are provenance queries. Newman applauds Mint Director Eva Adams's ability to work with numismatists while doing her job well ("the pleasant way in which you alternately threw barbs at some numismatists and then kissed them was a masterpiece of sincerity and tact") as well as J. Hewitt Judd's man cave ("I was very impressed, as you well understand, by the fantastic Basement Coin Castle and also by the fantastic completeness of your library"). He gives his opinions when asked for them and diplomatically keeps them to himself when not. Files of particular interest here include the Jack Collin correspondence (which centers on the 1794 dollar research Collins was conducting as well as the fate of their mutual friend Walter Breen), the William H. Sheldon file (recording a rare time when their paths crossed), and the file about the Louisiana Purchase Sesquicentennial Celebration (an ultimately vetoed effort, with which Newman was involved, to pass a bill authorizing a 50 cent commemorative issue recognizing the 150th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase). Correspondents include: Adams, Eva; Amato, Jon P.; Bates, Maffitt; Bolender, M.H.; Brooks, Mary; Burdette, Roger; Cole, Harmer B.; Collins Jr., Charles J.; Collins, Jack; Curtis, H. Allen; Davis, David J.; Dowling, Gloria and Hugh; Edison, Bernard; Eisel, Joseph F.; Fearon, Daniel; Finkelstein, David; Gettys, Loyd; Judd, J. Hewitt; Julian, Robert W.; Loring, Denis W.; Louisiana Purchase Sesquicentennial Celebration; Luer, Carlyle; Moulton, Karl (on Henry Voigt); National Bank of Detroit; Orosz, Joel J.; Perkins, W. David; Price, Ed; Rea, Rory; Reiver, Jules; Salyards, Harry E.; Schweppe Jr., Harry N.; Scott, William; Sheldon, William H.; Tripp, David and Susan; Wilkinson, Frank; Witham, Stewart P.; and Wolfson, William Quitman. - Eric P. Newman Correspondence Files: Paper MoneyA remarkable archive of five boxes of material, primarily consisting of original letters to Eric P. Newman from various collectors, students, and dealers involved with paper money (particularly early American paper money of the Colonial and Confederation periods) and carbon copies of Newman's letters in return, as well as copies of other associated items. Approximately 200 correspondents are included. Most materials are well-preserved. Given the size of this section of the Newman Archives, only a cursory overview can be given of some of the highlights. The Eric P. Newman correspondence on the subject of early American paper money reaches back before the Second World War. His correspondence with D.C. Wismer, for instance, begins in 1936. On August 12, 1939, Wismer closed a letter by noting that he was "sending a list of my Original Collection of Missouri notes Sold [to] the late E.H.R. Green," something Newman apparently followed up on. Newman's correspondence with John Muscalus begins in 1938, the year the first of Muscalus's numerous publications was printed. It spans 1938-1974 in 86 pages (with 64 pages before 1950). Newman's correspondence with another of the earlier 20th-century researchers, William H. Dillistin, begins in 1949 and runs for 44 pages through Dillistin's death in 1964. Newman began writing Julian Blanchard in 1948, connecting with him through Blanchard's activities with the Essay-Proof Society. Newman's correspondence with Blanchard is highly interesting and often downright scholarly, though it is not without its more amusing bits (on why he preferred to have a friend represent him at auctions instead of a dealer, Newman writes, "Frankly, I do not like to use the professionals because some of them do not have the kind of morals I approve of"). Correspondence between Eric P. Newman and a later generation of paper money scholars includes substantial material from Fred Marckhoff (over 180 pages, plus an additional 90 pages of correspondence and an inventory relating to Newman's purchase of Marckhoff's collection after his untimely death in 1966). These letters are often very detailed and informative. There are several files of Richard T. Hoober correspondence (1957-1975), totaling over 400 pages, including one specifically on the Wismer Catalogue Revision Project, and another devoted to material from the Fred R. Marckhoff collection sold to Hoober by Newman. The Marckhoff and Hoober files together paint a vivid picture of collecting Obsolete bank notes before there were standard references for most states. The paper money segment of the Newman Archives includes thousands of pages of correspondence, some of it casual and chatty, but much of it deeply informative and even dense. It awaits a devoted caretaker, but promises much to reward the explorer. Correspondents include: Abel, Darrell; Allen, Arthur H.; American Bank Note Company; Anderson, William G.; Bain, Thomas; Baker, Harold E.; Baldwin, Agnes; Barnes, Roger E.; Barrett, Dawn; Birt Jr., Hal; Blanchard, Julian; Blom, Christian; Bloom, Murray Teigh; Boettcher, M.J.; Boling, Joseph E.; Bowen, Harold L.; Bowers, Q.
