A bell rings whenever the cash drawer is opened. The drawer contains a small plastic tube with screws and other spare parts. No keys included. Constructed of dark wood, brass, and glass tubes. - Early 20th Century Sovereign ChangerA turn-of-the-century cast iron device for changing gold sovereigns and half sovereigns into equivalent amounts of silver coins. The facade is domed and decorated in Art Nouveau style, with two slots for sovereigns and half sovereigns and two drawers for delivering silver coins. The front is hinged and lockable, and the inside door is inscribed OLE PROPRIETORS PATENTEES/CLEMENT, GARRETT & CO./NEWCASTLE ON TYNE/MAKERS/ GEO. SALTER & CO./ WEST BROMWICH. A large central column holds a mechanism for receiving the gold coins and a large tin box, possibly for storing silver coins. Two flanking columns, with doors, hold a number of circular tin holders designed to deliver the silver coins in change. A large, two-compartment drawer extends across the bottom. More circular tin holders are arrayed on dowels on the outside of the changer. A spare key is located inside the large tin box, and the primary key is taped to the top. The body is made of wood, with brass fittings and a glass pane in the hinged front door. There is a crack in the glass pane. The door has a brass fitting with slots for depositing sovereigns and half sovereigns. Behind the glass, a large central column holds a mechanism for receiving the gold coins, inscribed PATENT/22067. Two flanking columns hold a number of circular brass holders designed to deliver the silver coins through two drawers below the door. A locked money box is at the bottom. A painted wooden medallion at the top reads W.H. ELLS/PATENT/"SAFECHECK"/ MANUFACTURERS/ W.H. ELLS & CO./REG DESIGN. An enameled white plaque on the door reads LUND & REYNOLDS Ltd/BAR FITTERS/BRADFORD. Two brass tubes in the top include some rolled up correspondence and a patent application from 1904. - Large Size English Sovereign Changer Patent number 22067. William Henry Ell created this English gold coin exchanger to provide change for gold sovereigns and half sovereigns. Ell was born in London, England, about 1849, and he was a cabinet maker per the 1891 England census and a till manufacturer per the 1911 England census. This machine has 46 brass cups that hold change for sovereigns and half sovereigns. The glass door has slots for those denominations, and a reject slot is located between the change slides above the locked drawer. Excellent condition. Accompanying this lot are a sovereign and a half sovereign. Approximate dimensions: 21.5 x 7.5 x 6.5 inches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
