- 1781 Imitation British Halfpenny, XF Newman 42-81C Plate ObverseThe obverse is plated in Eric's 1988 article. This example is clearly finer than the plate coin in Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families. We have no records of ever handling this variety before, and it is possibly the finest known. Both sides exhibit glossy olive-brown surfaces with minimal handling evidence. An exceptional opportunity for the highly advanced specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15041 (realized $4800). - Selection of British Counterfeit Halfpence ErrorsA 1775-dated reverse brockage is identified as die 75A in the "British Toon" family of counterfeit halfpence, with a recut N in BRITAN. This piece grades XF with lovely light brown surfaces. A second 1775-dated reverse brockage from an uncertain family grades XF or better with choice surfaces. A duo-reverse example is distinctive, although its family remains undetermined. Several characteristics should aid eventual discovery. Britannia has a long neck, although this piece does not match any of the Long Neck family members. The two dies, while naturally not identical, are very close in their appearance. This piece grades XF or finer with choice steel-brown surfaces. Another duo-reverse example is possibly from the Wedge-Top Sevens family. Fine to VF with attractive olive-brown surfaces, this piece exhibits slight planchet rifts on one side, with minor cracks and die bulges on the other side. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15039 (realized $1200). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11800
